Paint

We are thinking of re-painting interiors. We are already familiar with Benjamin Moore flat, matte, satin impervo, etc. Never used Aura.

Any recs for other paints? Paints you have particularly liked? Disliked? Painting a bunch of rooms, hallway, trim, etc.

If you have kids or generally care otherwise, don’t ignore VOCs or other toxins that are less recognized. EWG is a great website for checking health and environmental impact of products.

I’ve been using their Regal line mostly. I get it at an ACE but it’s not carried by all of them.

BM Super Hide shouldn’t be confused with a durable commercial grade paint. It’s a builders grade paint. Super Hide is fine, but I wouldn’t use it in my own home. It’ll take primer and two coats, whereas a better BM paint might only need one coat. In the end it’ll cost you more than springing for the Regal line.

Consider the BM commercial grade paints. Super Hide flat white for ceilings and Super Hide semi-gloss white for trim is amazing stuff. For walls I used Ultra Spec 500 interior flat and was reasonably happy. It’s not the most durable, but i’m not sure that’s on account of the paint itself or the fact it’s a flat finish.

Martin Kesselman at the Incolour store in Chinatown (he ran Colours by Martin in Chelsea and recently moved) has all of those brands at his store and is a tremendous font of knowledge.

We love Ben Moore but are now looking at some gorgeous colors with Farrow and Ball (they have flatiron store plus online) and Fine Paints of Europe (OMG their glossy door kit!).

We like Farrow and Ball because their colors are highly edited — there’s no 3,450 colors to go wading through. But I didn’t like the way the samples went on our walls — that may be just the samples tho.

We’re also DIYing the paint and I understand that F&B and especially FPE can be fussy and that you should hire someone. FPE even certifies its painters on technique.
