Package theft

Someone literally came to our door, opened our package, took the items and left the empty box in front of our stoop. Is this the new normal now!? Feeling quite upset. Should I report to police?

the police never want to take a report. my then 12 year olds bike was stolen out of our back yard and i found it nearby. it had a flat so the thief dumped it. when i called the police they had every excuse for not taking a report, including that my son might have left the bike there.

this is the problem with the police. they all complain they are over worked. that is what they have told me on two occasions they would not take a report at my house. but do they not understand their own system enough to know that you have to report crime to get help? they are great at pushing back against the public and we hear their union shout this and that but why won’t they push back against their bosses? they have a union to do this.

if stuff for my business was being stolen, i would tell the police my insurance policy requires a police report or something.

the bad thing about this is, if this keeps happening, shippers will begin charging a premium to come into the city or i can imagine ebay sellers declining to ship to certain areas.

I don’t blame the police for not taking the reports, I blame the mayor. Crime was up before the virus and so much was going undocumented intentionally.

So sad to hear that this apparently happens to almost everyone 🙁 And shame on these people stealing during this horrible time. We have 2 small kids, I can’t imagine if one of these packages was actually something I urgently need for them, e.g. formula/diapers. Argh…

I actually find USPS to the best option for packages because they are able to leave the boxes between the double sets of doors in our building. They have a key to the key box that allows them to enter and deliver the mail, and so they can drop boxes as well. If it’s FedEx or UPS, all they can do is leave it on the stoop (although they’ve started just leaving a “We Missed You” note on the door and coming back another time).

When I was still traveling to an office, I could also have packages delivered there since there’s always a human to recieve them.

You should demand that they take a police report. They won’t actually investigate, but it goes into the statistics and can force them to take action (like increasing patrols).

What I was forced to do when my buddy who owns a store nearby closed for a couple weeks was find an alternate drop off point where I could pick up my packages. Amazon has lockers set up in retail stores all over. Fed Ex does as well. If you order elsewhere UPS also has drop off points I believe in those Mail/Copy/ Printing places and UPS stores. The USPS offices in Williamsburg and Greenpoint are the worst. I would not purchase from any vendor unless they give me an alternative to USPS. As it turned out my buddy opened back up and I’m back to having everything shipped there again . But these are the safest ways vs home delivery.

People are following the delivery trucks and grabbing packages immediately. One was stolen from my neighbor as she was walking to answer the door and by the time she opened the door, the package was already stolen. We left a note on our door warning of package theft and asking the delivery people to wait for a signature. They don’t even have time to read the note. They just ring and run — but at least they ring. So far, we’ve been able to intercept all the packages.

We have “lost” packages before, but this one was just outright a-hole. The person opened the box, unwrapped everything, took the 2 items inside, and left the box and plastic wraps right outside of our door. It’s like they wanted to make sure we knew it was stolen. I’m just really upset. At least take the whole damn box so I don’t have to cleanup after you, you know?!

RE: Lazership, they’re actually the only delivery service that consistently rings our doorbell when they make a delivery. I guess the service quality varies with the driver assigned to your route.
