Outer court, Inner Court ,Recess understanding the definition from NYC Building

code Chapter 2 Section 12-10page 23 , 24 & 25 ; I am not able to understand which of this applies to my design which has a court/recess by virtue of a building having a rear yard of 36 ft width and 30 feet depth and the cort is 17.75 ft wide parallel to the rear lot line and 17.75 along the side lot line perpenducular the rear lot line with a mirror image building abutting it making a combined court of 17.75+17.75 wide parallel to rear lot line [Plot Plan](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s1/:brownstoner:8yOH:plotplan.jpg.jpg)

If the court is square, or wider than it s deep, then you can definitely have a legal window on the back of the house if there is 30′ or more to the rear property line, but I believe that a window in the side of the court cannot be a legal window as it is less than 30′ from the side property line.

You may want to consider taking these questions to the DOB on Homeowner’s night.

Thanks this is a R6B zone with a layover of C2/3. Since the width and depth is 17.75 each can I have a legally required window on both side of the court

This is an outer court. If the width of an outer court is less than 30′, then it’s a narrow outer court. How that affects you depends upon which zone you’re in. ZR 23-841 (a) is for R1 thru R5, 23-841 (b) is R6 thru R10.
