Outdoor Lighting Advice

I’m looking to upgrade the lighting on the front of my brick rowhouse. It currently has a cheap wall lantern on the right side of the parlor level double door entryway and a second identical one adjacent to the garden level entryway.

I found a new wall lantern for the parlor level entryway (see attached photo). It’s fairly ornate so I would like a simpler lantern for the garden level entryway that still seems to match.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

But lamps with unpolarized plugs, which are common, are likely to have reversed polarity 50% of the time and we don’t hear about a lot of electrocutions

Right bob. I do this stuff here as well for my own home and have thought about restoring light fixtures as a side or retirement business. Keep in mind, i already repair a lot of damaged brass and weld steel and solder so i can roll right into this myself. BUT, suggesting that people who might have no experience with electricity do these things could endanger an entire family. One thing that makes me very nervous is, i have heard other professionals at my level disregard grounding and ground wires and the importance of them and i also get nervous because some people reverse polarity meaning now the neutral is the hot – and on light fixtures that means the aluminum colored threaded part on the light socket can become energized and that means if someone changes a bulb with the switch on and touches that, they can get zapped.

I was looking last night to see if people who rewire lamps are to have a UL certification.

Reversed polarity and open grounds are a big deal when inspecting homes, btw.

Bob. Right but choice can be limited so people settle for what is easily found, no hassle.

Here is a thought. Buy something old on ebay. Yes, it will have to be rewired and hardware stores used to do that sort of thing. There might be others around who wire fixtures.

FWIW I think the second fixture would look better in BOTH locations. The first, more ornate, fixture is better suited to the suburbs, or neighborhoods like Mill Basin.

Thanks Cate. I had no idea of the style (thank you) but thought it would match since it’s black and has hammered glass like the other lantern. I live in a red brick rowhouse and would like to use the second one outside the garden level entrance, and the first one at the parlor level entrance. I’m hoping the two lanterns can work well together, with most of the attention going to larger one on the parlor level.

That second one is a beautiful Arts & Crafts style sconce. That period was circa 1909-1930 but the lamp could probably work with a wide variety of house types.

There are some mid price options we’ve had good luck with, mostly Rejuvenation but also Schoolhouse, Crate and Barrel, etc. We try to use only UL listed fixtures and of course as suggested above outdoor lights must be designed for outdoor use. Wayfair also carries a wide variety of options.

Well I usually start with eBay and hope. The prices for those things are all over the map. Also see Rejuvenation website’s vintage department. There is another site having a store closing sale: Materials Unlimited, in Michigan. They clean up and rewire all their fixtures and are very nice folks.
An issue is whether the lamp can get wet. Some lamps are for protected areas such as an outdoor vestibule or porch. If you get full on northwesters by your door you will need a lamp UL rated for wet conditions. You will also need to decide if you want LED or a hard wired lamp.
