Outdoor cooking surface- fire/bldg codes?

We already have an approved gas line to our outdoor grill which is about 15 ft from the bldg. Wondering if there are codes requiring certain distance from the building structure or side property line. We’d like to move it closer to the house on a concrete deck.

@doorsbythetinkerswagon – As an architect, I try to keep my comments limited to permanent structures, but yes, I’ve seen that as well.

@dorkofwindsor – From what I have been told by plumbers and inspectors, and from what I’ve seen in the code, yes, the grill is not prohibited from being close to the house, but that 10′ minimum includes exterior wood trim like moldings around doors and windows, deck railings, etc., as well as wood windows and doors themselves, as combustible materials, so the grill would need to be 10′ from those as well.

Jim – so if you have a steel deck (or a concrete slab) and a fully brick house wall…. is it allowable to put it close to the building? some people would like their grill within close proximity to the kitchen area and all I can see that might get in the way is foregoing a “wood topped” deck for a diamond plate (or concrete etc). Does that sound correct?

I’m an architect and I can say that the DOB has told us that a hard-piped gas grill must be 10 feet from ANYTHING combustible, on your property or the neighbors.

You’ll need an LMP for certain.
DOB: “Keep all barbecues at least 10 feet from anything that can easily catch fire, including building walls, deck surfaces, furniture or other items”.
311: Concrete, brick, and metal are examples of materials that may not burn.

This does make one believe that you can place it at the rear of a traditional flat brick brownstone backyard wall – and I am hesitant to recommend that.

I would personally love to hear that confirmed by an LMP. Or architect.

i seem to recall that the grill is supposed to be 10′ from the side property lines which seems odd since many lots are 20′ wide. but that is why i recall it; the incongruity. they are basically telling those of us with 20′ lots that we cannot barbecue.
