Online shopping conundrum/vandalism

The Amazon/online shopping phenomena is a Jenie that isn’t going back in the bottle. The ripple effects are just getting starting. Brownstone building, no one home and FedEx and UPS in particular, leaves unattended packages on property on ground level driveway entrance to my owner apartment. The result has been that packages are stolen and my car has been
broken into while parked in the driveway. I have caught UPS leaving unattended packages without ringing their bells or leaving attempted delivery notice. The UPS delivery guys point out that Amazon has directed them to leave packages if no one is available to receive package.

I’ve long since had my own packages delivered to a nearby UPS Store. The tenants don’t seem to be similarly inclined. As such, there is an unsafe circumstance developing with less than honorable folks coming into the property. Other owners have reported that they’ve seen people follow delivery trucks, wait for them to leave unattended packages, and then they pounce.

Any thoughts on how to navigate these circumstances?

My friend in Philadelphia reports it works for her there (in Center City). I guess we could conclude that people in Philly are smarter than those in Brooklyn, but that hasn’t been my experience…

Re package box with code: agree with bob on getting them to enter code. These guys aren’t brainiacs and or are in too much of a rush to care.

We got a deck box like this that sits on our porch (camera monitored): http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70204923/

It looks nicer than those metal toolbox looking things and manages to make it less obvious that you got something. We have a tiny sign directing carriers to put package in box.

Our regular UPS guy loves it tho he initially had to tell my USPS guy to use it. Even the randos they use for lasership etc still manage to figure it out. Greater than 95 percent of our packages are placed in the box by the carrier.

Bob, my understanding is that she provides a code as part of the instruction for delivery info when she places an order. I am waiting for Elon Musk to dig up my street and install pneumatic tubes that lead to my cellar. And then my robot will retrieve my packages.

RE: the two posts above, would most delivery people be willing, or able, to deal with a code? Also, how would you get it to them. USPS, UPS, and Fedex have numerous package delivery people and multiple deliveries/day. Also, Amazon uses some small, rather spacey companies [i.e. Lazership].

More and more deliveries from Amazon are being made by Amazon Logistics. These are contract delivery people who oftentimes are rather clueless. They will leave packages anywhere

Has anyone installed a package box on their own property? So a large non-USPS receptacle to accept these packages? I have a friend in Philly with an smartlock and vestibule who gives delivery people a code. Seems like we are in a transitional time in figuring this out. Lost one package already. I put my neighbor’s packages inside their house when I see them left outside (I have their keys).

I think the camera part of the Ring floodlight cam that Dave is referring to is the more important part than the floodlight. Knock on wood we have cameras and packages left all the time and haven’t had anything stolen yet.
