ONCE A WEEK VS. TWICE A WEEK ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING .

Why are some parts of Brooklyn Monday/Thursday and Tuesday/Friday alternate side and others are Monday and Thursday or Tuesday and Friday? Is it possible to petition the Dept. of Sanitation to change the rules in a certain neighborhood? This happened when I lived in Fort Green on Carlton, at some point all the signs changed and we only had to move our cars once a week. It was great and I wish my new place was on a street like this. Anyone have experience with this?

The Dept. of Sanitation grades the streets in a neighborhood for cleanliness over a period of time. Depending on the grade the area becomes eligible for once a week cleaning. Since the sign changes are expensive, the area must wait for their turn.

I have noticed that once you go to one day each week the streets become filthy and litter filled. Cars will often park for three continuous weeks without moving, effectively preventing sweeping. Two or three parking tickets are much less expensive than garage parking. I have seen cars park, the driver exits with luggage, and car service arrives to pick them up. The car then remains, unmoved for two weeks. The tickets are much less expensive than airport parking.

I think we may all be saying the same thing — in Cypress Hills we have to move it 2x a week for EACH side of the street, resulting in moving 4x per week inclusive of both sides of the street.

OK I looked it up, I think I am in BK032 sanitation cleaning section which for 2017 had an “Acceptable Streets %” of 91.0 and i guess that is not good enough? where i used to live that has 1x a week alternate side had a score of 93.1%……i am unable to find any info as to what the cutoff is for reducing a cleaning section from 2x to 1x.

I have never read a compelling explanation of why some have 1x and others have 2x/week other than the wealthy areas of Brooklyn had the $$$ to “persuade” the powers that be to change it to only 1x per week. That was the theory put forth by some activist in an article a while ago that I can’t find again.

My experience fits that narrative — I’ve lived in many parts of Brooklyn from Brooklyn Heights years ago to DUMBO/Vinegar Hill etc to Cypress Hills now and in the former areas 1x/week but in CH people have to do it 2x/week, which is part of reason we passed on any home that did not have a driveway when we were looking.

I’d love to hear alternate theories.
