old gas light

can someone recommend a plumber who is familiar with old gas light; I have one coming out of the ceiling and one in the wall; the elec says they are capped but I want to make sure no gas is there?

Here’s what I’ve learned:
1. Don’t assume that prior renovation choices make any sense at all, or have been performed in a legal or workmanlike manner. If a gas pipe is capped, it could easily still be ‘live’ (I have first-hand experience with this). Assume prior work was done as expediently as possible, by people with only a marginal understanding of what they were doing.
2. Get a plumber to do all work on gas lines.
3. Get a permit for the gas work.

Any licensed plumber who deals with heating and is licensed to deal with black pipe, which is almost every plumber, will be able to deal with this. Some things to watch out for: (1) If you recently bought the house make sure the gas service is actually on before the plumber tests to see if there is gas in the fixtures. (2) It’s very likely the stove gas and the light gas are all mixed up and you cannot simply cut only the lights at the meter without also cutting the stove line or lines. Most of the houses were built this way from the beginning, and the lines are hidden in the walls and cannot be traced. (3) Have a quick look at the lines coming out of the meter and see where they go. (4) When we rewired our house, National Grid told us the gas was on. Our electricians detected no gas coming out the fixtures, so they cut them all to put in electrical boxes. When we tried to get the new stove working, National Grid then flip flopped, said the gas wasn’t on, turned i t on, said we had a massive leak, and turned it off again. Naturally we had a massive leak — the electricians had cut all the lines. We put in an electric stove.

If you look above your meters you will likely see a branch of thin gas pipes. That is the old service for gaslight and should not be connected to the meter anymore.

It’s ok to leave it if it’s cut at the meter. You might be able to make that determination yourself. Otherwise any licensed plumber should be able to handle this.

It may be that the old gas lines are capped at the fixtures AND cut off at the meter. That’s what I found at my house. I suspect that the former preceeded the latter by many years.

If your house once used gas lighting then capping a particular fixture is the least of the issues you need to address. As DiBS said, the correct solution is to cut the gas line at the meter and repipe the gas lines for the 2-3 applications in your home that still use gas (water heater/boiler, range and dryer). Otherwise, capped fixture or not, you will have live ~70 year old gas lines running throughout your house that are likely all leaking. If you cut the line at the meter you no longer need to worry about these lines and whether a particular fixture is capped.

I’d trust the electrician. Thye deal with these all the time in Brooklyn. You can probably see for yourself where all the new metered gas lines go in the basement anyway. They won’t be connecting to these old lines.
