Oil tank whistle pipe is "corroded"

I did a search through the forum and didn’t find anything, but apparently we’ve got an issue with the pipe connected to the whistle on our oil tank. For some background: the whistle lets the person filling the tank know when the tank is full, but the pipe doesn’t carry any oil or vent any fumes itself.

According to the oil delivery service, the pipe has corroded (possibly because it’s missing the cap on the outside of the building, but that’s a separate issue, and something that they should have mentioned at some point over the past 2.5 years). Furthermore, the oil company says their maintenance plan doesn’t cover plumbing work, so they want to charge a somewhat excessive amount to install a new pipe through the exterior concrete.

I’ve got another plumber coming to take a look at it in two days and when I told him about it he didn’t seem to think an entire pipe replacement would be necessary, so I’m just wondering if anyone else has run into this issue. Also, since I’ve had other headaches with this oil delivery company in the past, I’m wondering if anyone’s got a rec ommendation for an oil delivery service. We probably would have switched the gas but bought the building during the National Grid moratorium, and at this point I’m not even sure what the future hold. Thanks!

You could get a new oil boiler. We installed ours in 2009 for $6500 and it’s working great. The tank and pipes were/are old, so we’ve had to replace both pipes recently. Needless to say, whatever you do, be sure to have it installed by a licensed professional who specializes in whatever type of boiler and heating system you are installing.

Thanks for the responses. The 20+-year-old oil boiler has been headache after headache. Any thoughts about whether it makes sense to switch to gas? It’s a four story building with steam radiators and we don’t have the budget to do anything drastic here (though there are mini-splits on two of the floors, we rely on the radiators for most of the heating).

We’ve had more than a few of these pipes replaced. Vague recollection is cost about $1200 for the last one in 2019 or so.

Abetta Boiler and welding (212) 473-2390 re-piped a fill vent for me several years ago. Pipe is not cheap. Grueling labor is not cheap. Frank is my go to guy for this kind of rough boiler work. Decades old family business run by his father before him
