NYC requirements for drip irrigation / lawn sprinklers?

I’m considering if its practical to put in a simple/budget DIY style drip irrigation and lawn sprinkler system (~2 heads) for my small yard connected to my existing garden hose spigot. Does anyone know where I can find the rules / regulations around this? Do you typically need a permit to install? Who enforces the rules e.g. DoB/DEP, and do they actually ticket/inspect irrigation systems.? There’s lots of DIY kits available online, but not a lot of info on requirements. I assume I’ll need a vacuum breaker but, will I need a basic one attached at the spigot, an separate anti siphon device, or a full one with check valves etc?

Agree with NeoGrec – how much direct sun do you get? What do you want to grow? A lot of factors to consider.

We have usual size Brooklyn back yard that gets a LOT of sun in relation to most, we grow mainly veggies in raised beds with a peony here and there and two small espaliered pear trees. We probably should do drip irrigation- indeed, we have a kit and timer we bought 6 years ago – but haven’t gotten around to installing it yet.

Full height of summer we’re watering 3x/week and I fork those duties over to the hubby so it doesn’t feel all that onerous to me! In fairness he’s the one who grows most of the veggies tho.

If you go away without an automatic system in place, it could be just one more thing to worry about while you’re on vacation.

Every backyard is different. Because of several large, thirsty deciduous trees in our yard and our neighbor’s, we have to water at least x3 a week all summer long. Finally, last year, we had a professional irrigation system installed. Water bill is now lower than with our old drip hose system and much better for the plants. We used Fazio Traina (718-951-8181).

To echo these sentiments, now that our 20×40 garden is well established with shrubs (including evergreen) and perennials, with mulch in between, we don’t need to water those plants often — only if there has been no rain for more than a week and it’s during the hottest time of the year. For annuals, vegetables, anything in a pot, or new plants of any kind, on the other hand, we do water frequently, about every other day or so.

House fix, i took care of a large property that had an irrigation system and see these in the burbs. I have a small lot here and it never entered my mind to install one. Yet i do sometimes have to water plants. So i bought a timer for the hose and sprinkler and never bothered to install that. I think your last line sums it up.

Also, at a commercial place in nyc we once put drip hoses in and they all split the first season.

Hmm good to know. Is your yard in a fairly shaded area? Yep I have a spigot, but now I’m thinking it may not be worth the hassle to put in a system in if its not really needed.

Do you have a spigot? Go to town with your DIY drip irrigation. We have had several in our yard (all since failed).

What we found was once the garden was well established, the drip system was a nice supplement, but hardly necessary. 20×40 ft space.
