NYC Condo Tax abatement for non-owner occupied condos

I own a condo in nyc that I’ve rented out since 2018. I noticed my July 2023 property tax bill jumped 25% and it’s because the abatement was removed. The abatement was removed for all unit owners regardless if it was their primary residence or not.

I inquired with my building manager and he relayed the abatement was for units which were primary residences only. Now a case is opened with NYC Tax.

Will NYC try to claw back the taxes from when I originally rented the unit out? Is there anything I can do to prevent that?

Could it be that the abatement expired for the whole building? Especially as you share it was removed for resident owners as well as absentee landlord owners.

I never understood why people buying $$$ condos deserved property tax breaks, or why people living in $$$ brownstones only pay a fraction of the property taxes that non abated condo owners pay. the system is so beyond broken.

I lived in the condo for 5 years. The condo had an ongoing property tax abatement for all unit owners. Once I rented it out it was no longer my primary residence.
