New Windows - Help

Every time I look out my windows, I want to update them because there are long streaks and dirt trapped inside that I can’t get out. Ruins the view.. The windows are also dated and drafty. I still have the iron window guards on them too so it looks like jail. My husband thinks it’s safer to keep them to deter burglars. Interested in new windows but curious the ballpark estimate per window. Would i need a permit if I want to make a window bigger in size to allow more light? Should I remove the metal security bars? They are on the front windows of both floors with the front door being only means of egress (Two family house). I have a baby also. Not sure if it’s a requirement to have window guards (another reason why my husband thinks it’s easier to just keep everything as is for now)

Hey we had security bars and when we replaced we used laminated glass and got rid of the bars. Lammy is good not just for security but reduces sound transmission as well.

The upcharge for lammy varies widely by manufacturer. At the time we bought a couple of years ago the Marvin fancy line (then called ultimate next generation) charged the least compared to others for lammy so it was a no brainer to go Marvin. Yes that make sense — lots of divided lights/panes. Very typical of early 20th century bungalow type houses (even the ones in Brooklyn that are too narrow to be bungalows). Windows are key to the look of a home. IMHO best approach is to try to preserve or re-create what was there originally as much as you can while still being practical. I would stick to the window size and style that was there originally as much as you can.

I am in an early 20th century brick rowhouse. The old windows had a black wood frame that looked like a bingo board with rows and columns if that makes sense. The neighbors redid theirs and have a white wood frame with white grilled instead of black.

Are you in a 19th century row house in Brooklyn? Or an early 20th century house? Look at your neighbors and the 1940 tax photo to see what the windows might have looked like back then. If it’s a wood frame with vinyl siding house and you change the size of the windows you will also need to alter the siding. Brick is a little different. If you’re in an early 20th century row house, you can get some ideas from vintage Sears kit house illustrations, Jane Powell’s Bungalow Details, and Dover publications showing vintage house plans and elevations.

Thanks @stevecym and @cate , good info. Only a few houses in the area still have the security bars. I only have them for the front rooms, not the bedrooms. Thinking to just remove them but spouse likes the added security. I’d probably have to add some type of guards for the baby after that too.

I’m not sure how old the windows are. Some slide left and right to open . Particularly not sure what to do about the windows in the kitchen and baby’s room. They are small and pull open with a latch which I have never seen before. Seems awkward and takes up space when open and if you’re tall enough you can hit your head.

Getting new replacement windows generally costs about $500 and up per window, including installation., depending on size and type of window. Whether or not it is practical to make window bigger depends on whether or not the windows you have now fill the entire hole there already and what your house is made of. One options is to research and make plans now so you are ready to start work when the crisis passes. Re the bars, it really depends. Do others in your area have bars? Every bedroom must have quick release bars in at least one window if I am not mistaken.

the seals have failed on the double pane windows, that is why they are dirty inside. condensation settled. if these windows are old, it may not be worth doing, but you can change the glass by ordering another double pane unit. over the course of my life, i had changed quite a few of these and i cannot recall pricing. let’s say a 2×2.5′ double pane piece of glass might be about $150 plus installation (perhaps you can do them yourself; i have changed some over the years for customers and i used to do the service on windows for the company i worked for; some of this is a long time ago).

in so far as i know, those security bars are illegal or have to have a way of getting them open in an emergency. let’s see what others say.

windows will be all over the place. you can get cheap vinyl like we did in my house or go top shelf. you might get the smaller ones for perhaps 250 each on the cheap side and installation will be that again plus some. the nice, pella, marvin will be double that at least.

in so far as altering size. the code says no. no permit is required to change windows so long as you do not alter the size. it can be done but then you have to pull a permit. that said, my neighbors have altered theirs without pulling a permit and i am sorry i did not do the same here. you could probably get away with minor changes.
