New Support Beam In Basement

Anyone have an idea of how much it would cost to replace the support beam that runs in the basement. Quotes for steel or wood would be appreciated. This is for a townhouse that sits 20ft wide and 45ft deep.

We replaced our termite damaged wood girder with a steel one about 4 years ago. Cost was about $7K and included new footings, new girder replacing entire length of old, and sistered steel C-channels to damaged floor joists (about 6 in total). Company was excellent, very happy with with work and results and price was in ballpark of other estimates.

To add to eileengray’s comment, there are a ton of variables here that could affect your situation. Whether the beam is exposed (as it seems) versus being in a finished space; if you have columns and stable/proper footings is huge; and also whether the existing beam is under joists or if they hang from it, in which case you’d need to cut every joist and re-hang them, which is substantially more work. If you have pipes and electrical crossing the beam you have to account for them too. I’m delighted and surprised that someone could do that for $6k.

I just had this done. Replaced the old original wood load relieving beam (rotted out and twisting) in the cellar with a 10in x 26lb steel i-beam that runs the full 45 feet of building depth, also 6 inches in the wall on both sides. I had multiple quotes and all were the same at around $6k.

Cost roughly $13,000 – $18,000 depending on the actual scope of work. If the existing support beam doesn’t have proper columns and footings, you’ll need to include that work. You will need a temporary support wall during the installation. You should get a structural engineer to make sure it’s done right. There isn’t a big differential between wood and steel. Steel doesn’t shrink or rot. This is not a quote – you need more detail for that.
