New Entry Doors, security issues? glass/plexi??
I plan to renovate/update my entry doors and vestibule. In my neighborhood, owners are replacing their old hi security steel doors with fully glass or plexi alumin doors, modern, decent looking but I am wondering how they are maintaining security with that transparency. Does anyone have experience with this? I want to do a full wooden door, something traditional. But am concerned about the “glass”. Any advice appreciated. mj

If other houses on your block still have the original glass in their front doors (you can tell if the glass is BEVELED), unlikely to have had a break-in through that glass in the past.

We have glass double doors at the top of the stoop with a half glass/half wood door behind that (i.e. on the other side of the vestibule). We’re landmarked so couldn’t replace them if we wanted to. Never had a concern about security but every block/neighborhood is different. Some neighbors have iron window guards on their doors. Depends a bit on your set up. Obviously you’re more vulnerable if you don’t have a vestibule. But, as Jonah intimates, a heavy front door is a significant obstacle. Also, most burglars don’t like climbing through a broken glass door — too dangerous and too visible vs. being handy with a crowbar.

From your post, I understood like you are preferring full wooden door rather than glass since you feel it as not secured.
But in normal glass doors/windows, you can install security film to safeguard from potential break-in. Hence it can prevent from the attack of burglars.

Hi,
Im a window and door guy based in Brooklyn.
I can order a 2 1/4″ thick mahogany door with a 1 3/8″ solid wood door frame. (Double the standard thickness)
Glass can be 1/4″ laminated glass- or any other option.
Add a solid lock and security shouldn’t be a problem.
Please feel free to email me at Jonah@whqinc.com

Where do you live? I lived on Stuyvesant Ave and replaced mine with this door that had nice bevel-cut glass and no security measures whatsoever! [Fullsizeoutput_8](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:IIEg:fullsizeoutput_8.jpeg.jpg)

sounds like you want an impact rated laminated glass. About as good s you can do without going bulletproof glass. Some will call this hurricane glass, laminated security glass, etc. This glass is usually a plastic (PVB) film laminated in between two sheets of glass.

We put laminated glass in our front door panels – sounds like what SoSlope is talking about, except it was done already before it was installed – 2 panes of glass glued together with the security film in the middle. So far so good, though as far as I know, no one has tried to break it 🙂

Also, it was reasonably easy to install myself and, once it dries, is completely invisible (provide you do a decent job getting the bubbles out).

I used this 3M film on all of my outside windows:
https://goo.gl/VcSZWJ
I can’t tell you if it works or not (I haven’t exactly taken a hammer to my front windows to test it…), but it gives me some comfort. I’m sure it is harder to break than simple glass.
With that said, a committed burglar could probably just take a crow bar or sledgehammer to the wooden door itself.
