Need to secure roof hatch
Need to install new lock on my roof hatch. Do I need a roofer or a locksmith or just a handyman? Any suggestions?

We did heavy duty hook and eye latches. That’s pretty common. You don’t want to be fumbling for a key in a fire. Opens only from the inside.

A simple U-bolt inserted into a hasp is as effective as a padlock, without the chance of loosing the key and locking yourself in.

I don’t know what the law is, but a roof hatch can definitely be a practical “means of egress.” If a fire ever blocked our stairs, I would definitely like to have the option of going up and across our neighbors’ roofs. Putting a pad lock on it seems like a bad idea. Then again, a good installed fire alarm system with multiple interconnected smoke detectors and central station monitoring makes the idea of my staircase being blocked before I can get out pretty unlikely (but anything is possible).

I don’t think roof hatch is a means of egress.

before you install a “lock” just make sure it is not a lock per se, but something that latches from the inside. FDNY needs to be able to open hatch and ventilate heat in case of fire. Also, if someone is trapped and the roof is the only safe way out, you might be creating a dangerous situation if there is a traditional lock.
