Need Expert in Split System AC

Dear Community,

Need your help. Installed a split AC system in my upstairs unit. Never used it since we installed it two years ago and now it seems like it’s leaking freon and not cooling. So afraid that they will have to break the walls to figure out where it is leaking… Does anyone has a solid HVAC contractor? I surely can’t go to the one to installed it. So frustrated.

Original installer as that should still be under their own warranty.
Other than that, any HVAC Company can help with this without opening up a ton of holes unless it is a large system that needs to be isolated.
Our company, just like most HVAC Companies, are booked for about 2-3 days right now.

Jeremy, i don’t think the op wants the original contractor back. It sounds like the contractor messed something up to the point the homeowner does not want to know them.

Can you ask the manufacturer to contact the installer about returning to repair? The installer may take contact from manufacturer more seriously than from a homeowner who hired for a one off job. Contacting BBB might be a beneficial follow up step if necessary

a lot of what goes wrong here with a lot of this stuff is that the installers do not follow the manufacturers direction’s or basic common sense professional standards.

Could it be leaking at a connection that was over tightened or not tightened enough or did someone over bend a tube or perhaps someone unrelated to the contractor drove a screw through a line? whatever happen here, someone did it. it did not happen on its own.

i only just thought of this (as i am writing) and i have not used it for this yet but i have been using a thermal imaging camera to find leaks in houses. i suspect that if that system still has freon in it and will leak when turned on, it will cause a temperature change behind the wall where it is leaking and i may be able to pick it up with the device. if you called me and i could not locate the leak, i would not charge you anything – so it may be worth the effort for both of us.

Why can’t you go to the one who installed it? Do you think he screwed it up?

If you think he was a screw up, call him back and ask him to explain what is going on. If you do not like his answer or you think he is the reason for the problem, you would be doing everyone in this city a favor by calling the nyc dept of consumer affairs and making a complaint.

I have not suggested what i did above to get him in trouble per se. I said it because this industry is largely unregulated and anyone can do it with little or no training. The people doing it need to be brought under the same licensing requirements as plumbers and electricians. This is evident by some of the complaints on this board and all of the misinformation out there about related systems such as heat pumps. It is up to the city to clean this mess up through further regulation. Oops, did i say a dirty word, “regulation”?

The city will not move until people complain. I belive the city counc il has a 5 member consumer affairs committee. I would complain to them about neede regulation.
