Need contractor to add crown moldings and plaster ceiling medallions

I’d be especially interested in working with someone who does restoration to ensure that what we add is period-appropriate (original details were removed). If anyone has a recommendation I’d be very grateful!

Check out neighboring houses and/or consult with a friend or neighbor who’s an expert on historic Brooklyn row houses. The plaster masters will execute it but not all know about styles. If you have any detail left (staircase, door/window surrounds), you could post a photo and we’ll opine. There are also a variety of books available, which may or may not be relevant depending on the age of your house, such as Bricks and Brownstones and Restoring a House in the City.

I usually dislike substituting modern materials for historic ones, BUT I recently replaced a cracked ceiling medallion with one made of polyurethane foam and, after priming and painting, I can’t imagine that anyone could tell it’s not plaster. Amazon has a vast number of styles of medallions and moldings. Some are made in China, but the one I purchased is made in Canada. I bought and returned a Chinese-made medallion because it was a bit too large, but the quality of the $20 Chinese medallion seemed really just as good as the $90 Canadian one I kept.

You’d have to consult some sort of style book, or look at neighboring houses, to determine what sort of design motifs to pick. One BIG advantage of polyurethane is that it’s light weight and can be installed by a carpenter or handyman (as long as he’s competent enough to properly miter the corners of moldings.

Raul 305 494 2539 I cannot recommend Raul enough. Not only is he an incredible workman and artist but a great guy as well. He did a great job restoring an ornate plaster ceiling hidden under a drop ceiling for us. Give him a call
