Need advice on switching from oil to- gas, I should think
Hi all
It’s hit me belatedly as Petro tried to sew us in for a crazy one-yr contract with v high ceiling price that it’s wise to switch from oil and heat our two-family brownstone another way. Everyone has gas. So….that’s the sensible move, right? Or – what about electric?
I’m stressed out and clueless.

Hi – I’m looking for someone to help with sensible insulation choices in my brownstone in bed Stuy – did you say you had someone that came to do this for you? Thanks.

We have Mitsubishi Mr Slims, all new windows, blown in insulation, had someone come thru with an infrared cam to find all the cold spots so we could fix them, etc. They’re about 4 years old so maybe something better is on the market now but those were top of the line when we got them.

Our units are Mitsubishi H2 Hyper Heat and are rated for sub-zero temps. 2700sf (including basement) attached rowhouse electric bill was about $500 in February. This was a net reduction of about $200 from our combined electric/gas bill from before. As mentioned above, newish windows and blown-in insulation.

i was able to heat my brooklyn townhouse with a mitsubishi city multi system…..it kept the place warm enough (coldest days it could get to about 68 degrees max) but the electric bill was astronomical (close to $1000 in Jan/Feb). we were very well insulated with all new windows.

empathie00 what brand and model mini splits do you have and how well insulated is your home. I have always heard mini-splits aren’t sufficient for space heating at low temps, but am starting to hear among neighbors and a couple friends that depending on the house (insulated with windows that are maintained) there are now some models that actually work fine. That of course means paying for it and not the cheapest models out there.

Just my $0.02: We have mini splits/heat pumps primarily for AC but have tried to use them for heating a few times when our oil boiler went out, usually on the coldest days of the year bc that’s what our boiler does . They produce at best lukewarm air when it’s very cold out. Asked HVAC contractor about this (we did a service call bc I thought they were broken!) and he said it’s normal and suggested getting space heaters. Um – no. Fine for the odd 50 degree fall morning, but personally I’d never rely on them as a sole heat source. Love them for AC!

It’s not for everyone, but a heat pump mini split system is worth considering. We used a state rebate program to get a really amazing deal on replacing our gas boiler with mini splits throughout our house. It was 30-40% cheaper this past winter and we’re now loving the super quiet zoned ACs. The caveat is your home needs to be well-insulated (we have newer windows and blown-in insulation in the attic) and it helps if you’re in an attached rowhouse like us. I will also warn that on really cold days it’s not as toasty, but still in the upper 60s which was fine for us. There are still some very good rebate programs out there, so talk to some HVAC contractors to see what it might run you. Happy to share mine if you like. He and his team were wonderful.

Read what resident2 says and this:
I use belmar fuel oil and used to pay cash but set up an on line account and i am happy. I bounced around for a year or so after ditching petro and belmar is where i ended up. Smaller company, it seems either the father or son delivers and both are polite and nice to talk to. They do maintenance as well.
Install a gas detector that covers various gas (natural & carbon monoxude). I have one in our kitchen. It went off some time back and guess what, someone had hit the gas knob when cleaning the stove and turned an unlit burner on and left it. Good to have.
Nat gas and oil are going to keep getting more expensive as long as demand reamains. And at some point we will be either extracting less of it from the earth or we will be have to get it from harder to get to places – which means it is going to get more expensive faster.

“Everyone has gas…” because many years ago Brooklyn Union Gas did a major marketing campaign to switch to gas & the anti Oil greens more recently do not think beyond the headline or realize that gas is also a green house fuel etc.
I actually prefer oil, for the time being… You have a choice (OK getting more limited!) as to who you buy from, you do not hear of people dying from carbon monoxide poisoning or buildings blowing up from oil leaks as much as I have known over the years, OK less so now with the enforcement of carbon monoxide detectors, but more so with the explosions as gas supplies have to be set at higher pressure points to service all the customers.
If your oil boiler is well maintained, cleaned regularly & works well. I would keep it & wait for all the kinks in the new technologies to be worked out. Or look into putting Solar Panels everywhere the sunshine’s & look into electric heating, but it will include all new systems so will not be cheap upfront. Electric heating without solar will be prohibitively expensive to run.

Bob, i have a conversion burner i was going to put on mine, myself. Then a couple buildings blew up and people died and i figured that this was not a good idea.
Yes it can be done. I might give the conversion burner away on here or donate it to habitat for himanity but if anyone goes to do this they mudt have a licensed plumber manage it.

That electric will be pricey.
We dropped petro for the same reason you did. But people who told me about them still use them. They say it is about the service.
We then went through exactly what you went through.
If your old boiler works and is paid for, keep it until you have exhausted every nickel out of it. Change it when the service people tell you it is time to get a new one.
