Need a Lawyer recommendation

Hi Brownstoner,
Our next door neighbor removed his roof eight months ago. There is now a gap where rain gets between our buil;dings. And we are now seeing signs of water damage on 2 floors of one of the chimney walls (made of plaster & brick). I spoke to one of the owners several times (it’s an LLC) about the water damage and he hasn’t responded. Currently they have multiple violations and are on a stop work order. One of the violations was from they’re doing underpinning without permission. So, in addition to the water damage, there might also be structural damage from this illegal underpinning job. I need a lawyer to help me navigate this situation. Someone who knows which professionals will determine what damages he caused, and advise how to proceed.
I know some would say not to get a lawyer and try to talk to your neighbor etc etc, but we’re past that stage. And it’s time to lawyer up.

I agree. It is time to lawyer up. The comments people make about talking to your neighbor first do not apply here (or they did apply, at which point you did talk to your neighbor, so you did this exactly right).

Absolutely you need a lawyer before things get much worse. When we had construction next door, we used Slater and Beckerman 212 391-8045 to represent us. Carol Slater was General Counsel in the buildings department several mayors back. We used them in fashioning an agreement with the builders (LLC) next door, but your issue requires the same type of knowledge. You also should get an engineer to assess the situation (and provide expert testimony if this eventually ends up in court). Your lawyer could probably suggest one. (or the reverse, if you have an engineer s/he might suggest a lawyer).
