Natural gas lines replacement

My UWS coo-op supposedly had a leak a month ago. NYFD and Con Ed came out and shut everything down. After 3 days we got our boiler and hot water heater turned back on. We still haven’t gotten our gas for appliances turned back on, supposedly because an inspector said we were not up to code (galvanized fittings I think). The pressure test apparently failed also. Our board seems to think throwing $100,000 to replace EVERYTHING is the solution. Perhaps just replacing the joints in the basement and doing a pressure test again (and ensure all endpoints in units are properly capped) would suffice? Or just installing new plumbing and not removing the old piping? Any thoughts or advice would be welcome. Thanks!

I suggest you to consult any expert plumbing consulting firm. It will guide you properly about your concern. As far as my knowledge, I know a consultancy named [Exengo](http://www.exengo.se/vvs-konsult/) which is better in handeling these sort of problems.

Agreed. Replace the piping. Crappy situation but it will be the easiest way out. Rip the baind-aid off quick or peel it slow…you’ll still hurt but the band aid must come off one way or the other. Sucks.

Con Ed is terrible at all this. Replace the gas piping and don’t give them a reason to walk away from the job, which they can’t wait to do.

New 2014 building code requires testing of all new or altered gas lines in its entirety, from meter outlet to appliance valves. 3psi for 1/2 hour. If pipe is painted 90PSI for 1/2 hour. Even more. To test gas line permit is required. No partial gas line testing allowed. Also, if old gas line has a leak, replacement of whole line is the most economical solution. Fixing and testing at the end will cost more. Removing of old gas pipes is not necessary. They can be abandon.

You are pretty much screwed..all old gas lines leak. Have a decent plumber test the manifold first and then each individual riser. If the gas manifold holds you are lucky…chances are that everything fails. NB get a guarantee in the contract that the new work will pass. I have seen a job where everything was redone and it still failed. Remember that there were 2 major explosions due to gas leaks and everyone is now walking on eggshells

Simply find a reputable company to deal with it. Most buildings would fail a pressure test, as the pressure they put on the pipes is way above what gas comes in at. I think it would be best to start in the basement, as everything is easily accessible. If thats not enough, test each line individually, to see which ones need work.
