National Grid not issuing new gas meters!

I have a two family and the prior owner used the house as a one family, thereby removing one of the gas meters a decade ago (the connections are still there). Now that I did renovations and got all the DOB approvals, National Grid is telling me there is a gas shortage in NY and thus, not issuing any new gas meters. Is anyone else experiencing this? I can’t move in without hot water and gas…. HELP!! And, they don’t have an ETA on when the gas shortage would be lifted. sigh

You’re getting great advice here. I have a legal 3 fam row house the former owner also used as a single family condemning the other 2 lines. Since it only effects cooking gas for me because I currently heat by oil, I just swallow the cost & make it a selling point, “heat & hot water included”, for now. Eventualy I will place water heaters in each unit & switch to gas & deal with it at that time…. not sure if that helps. Take care

Another option is to install an electric stove. Not as appealing as cooking with gas, it’s true, but workable. You will need to install a special, dedicated line for the stove with, if I am not mistaken, 220 volt service.

Realistically the gas used by a tenant will be minimal and likely contained to cooking gas. You’re most likely paying for their gas usage for heat and hot water already (unless you’ve plumbed in a separate HW heater). I would think your best bet is to adjust the rent accordingly and turn it into a selling point, “GAS INCLUDED!!!”

Could you operate everything off the one existing meter? That would mean paying for a tenant’s gas usage, but you could set the rent accordingly.
