National grid gas line inspection - charged $100

I own a 3 family building in brooklyn and noticed a month ago that National grid charged me $100 for each meter in the building b/c I failed to contact them to schedule an inspection. A total of $400. One for each unit’s gas meter and 1 for the common boiler’s meter. I never got a letter in the mail stating this was going to happen. (My mail frequently gets dropped off next door b/c the building next to me has the same number with an “A” at the end). I contacted national grid and I got a message to call Precision testing to schedule an appointment. I called PT a month ago and an automated voice message say’s they will call me in a week to schedule an appointment. I still haven’t got a call back. I’ve since called them 3x.

Anyone else dealing with this? Any possible solutions is much appreciated.

This happened to me earlier this year. My tenant got a noticed from National Grid that if he doesnt schedule an inspection, he will be fined $100 and/or his service will be terminated. I was a bit surprised since I remember passing the inspection in late 2018. When I spoke to the pipeline inspector, she mentioned that this is done every 2-3 yrs. Ironically I mentioned this to some of my friends that live in different areas of Brooklyn and they never been inspected once yet, go figure.

The inspector from Precision Pipeline Solutions just finished; it took less than 10 minutes. I had no leaks or other problems. They’ll be back every three years. It’s actually not a bad idea to have these inspections–being blown up by a gas explosion could spoil your whole day.
That isn’t to say that the poor service reported by other posters in this thread is acceptable.

Where I disagree is that National Grid should contact owners to schedule the test. Why harass and abuse tenants rather than communicating with building owners.

Someone from Precision Pipeline Solutions rang my doorbell last week wanting to do an inspection. I didn’t let them in because I wanted to verify that they were legitimate–they are–the inspections are really required. I wish I’d let them do the inspection then because their phone number is unusable. They neither answer nor, despite their claim, call back. However it was easy to schedule an inspection via their website. Now, will they ACTUALLY show up? I just got an automated phone call reminding me of my appointment tomorrow so it MIGHT work. We’ll see. It well might be a scheme to collect $100 fines. I don’t trust National Grid–they’re not in the same league as the late, lamented, Brooklyn Union Gas Company which actually had a real commitment to their service area and customers.

We had this where I live. Had to call Precision Pipeline Solutions (845) 566-8332 (had to get on a list for a call back) schedule an inspection. THEN call National Grid 1-1800-642-4272 tell them the lines were inspected and they will credit the account they said it would take 2 payment cycles to show up. I am currently waiting to see if this ends up being true.

anytime i have had an issue with a utility i have only had to mention the Public Service Commission and the problem got resolved, fast (one key stroke).

in so far as the post office not delivering the mail correctly. this has been getting worse and worse and worse. when i was a kid, we got a piece of the neighbor’s mail maybe once a year, if that. when we bought this house 16 years ago, maybe every other month or so. this past summer, we got someone else’s mail almost every day – and those neighbors had ours. i would tell National Grid that the postal service was THEIR chosen carrier to deliver what was THEIR responsibility to get into your hands and that anyone with any sense would realize the postal service is almost as reliable as the weather report and that if they have to send a request for access to someone, it has to go by certified mail or a final attempt has to be made by certified mail. it was their carrier who failed to get this to you.

if you do not get what you want with the dolt at the call center, ask for a supervisor and tell them all of the above and that you will complain to the PSC and you will send a copy of the complaint to your rep in albany. (the conversation will not go this far).

File a complaint for each meter with NYS Public Service Commission. The $100 will be refunded. This is outrageous on the part of National Grid. They don’t want to go to the trouble of contacting building owners for this inspection, so they harass the tenants.
