National grid

Howdy. Recently closed on a single family in sunset. I was receiving estimated readings since I moved in June. They mentioned on the phone that the billing was for a A1 gas type – which means the gas type was just cooking and hot water. The issue is that the previously elderly owners – used the gas for heat as well. I’m under the assumption that they just never called them. Is this a big deal? Do I tell them I’m using it for heat?

look at the front page of yesterday’s Daily News and understand that every time this happens city officials and the gas company get more intent on weeding out illegal gas work. i would not make that call to national grid until after i did what Gennady says. leave nothing to chance – both for the sake of safety and because you will need a plan if national grid says that the install was not legal and they make an issue of it.

would all boiler installations be noted on the DOB BIS system?

Check dob if the boilers were installed legally. if not legalize it asap and the plumber must make a case with the utility and straighten it up.

When we closed on our house we had one unit billed as you describe. I believe the previous tenant was a senior citizen, and i just assumed it was some kind of assistance program.

Anyhoo, we didn’t want to end up in a situation where National Grid would eventually figure it out and receive a bill 5-15+ years later for tens of thousands of dollars like you occasionally see on the news. The previous tenant was literally paying nothing, and i don’t think national grid knew there were two new gas boilers – one for each unit. That was pre-East Village incident though.

So instead of playing dumb and do nothing, we came clean and told them to change the billing. The woman i spoke to seemed surprised as to why i wouldn’t leave it the same and just go with the flow. I get it, but you know what – in the odd chance it came back around someday to bite me in the behind it certainly wouldn’t be the problem of a low level employee.

So that’s one approach, and i bet it wouldn’t be the most popular one.

After reading what bobjb said, I would be very careful of calling the gas company and asking if they are aware you heat with gas. Especially if you do not know the history of the installation. If this was me, I would not make that call until heating season is over in case any questions come up.

Also, double check your setup to be sure you know what you have. For example, you may have a hot water radiator system that uses oil as the fuel and includes hot water with no separate hot water tank. Your gas use could be limited to just the stove only. There are many different possibilities, I’m just using one as an example.

This is strange. The gas supplier has to sign off on all gas boiler installations. They should know that you have gas heating (not to mention the amount of gas consumed monthly would indicate gas heating.
