Multimedia /wifi layout in gut reno?

Hi all. I could use some help. We are doing a gut renovation and are within a couple of months of getting to the point where we need to think about how cable, wifi, etc will work in the new house and I’m not sure where to begin looking for help in thinking it through. Like, we would want wifi through the three floors but does that mean we need multiple cable/telephone hookups, one on each floor? We will want TV in a couple of rooms in the house, we should run all that cable in, etc. I don’t really want to hire a “consultant” but maybe I need to, to strategize how we lay out the multimedia cabling? Should I just ask Comcast about all of this? Any help with your past experience would be really helpful.

Thanks for the advice everyone! This is super helpful. ParkSlopeJason, I’m also planningo on doing the DIY route so this is super great to hear. Thanks for laying out your method.

SoSlope, running PVC conduits for ethernet in case of upgrade is a fantastic idea and makes tons of sense. I’ll ask the contractor about it. Thanks again!

I second the idea of using PVC conduit to run the ethernet in case of upgrade. We did this. It’s pretty cheap stuff available at the Home Depot, Lowes.

A friend ran some chases through the walls with pvc pipe to allow future wiring in the event that technology changes in the future (i.e., whatever might come after CAT6) or for any home automation they might want that required physical runs. It seems like a good idea of the walls are all open.

Hi there

We’ve just gone through this. We went the DIY route. We had Verizon install their optical network terminal (for 1GB cable broadband and TV) and their wireless router and cable TV box in the laundry room, which is on the ground floor of our 3 story. From the laundry (and before the drywall went up) we hard-cabled both co-axial and ethernet to two television points. We also cabled 3 further ethernet-only points: the study (for a desktop computer), the kitchen (for internet-only TV) and an extender/repeater (which we haven’t purchased yet) on the first floor to provide wireless internet to the 1st and 2nd floors.

I’m amazed at how great the wireless signal loss is between floors. I’m already thinking about running yet another cable to the second floor.

I know there are wireless solutions for extending coverage but I prefer the reliability of having cables. Also wired is significantly faster and is the only way to take advantage of the full 1Gb we a re paying for.

If you can map out the plan yourself, laying the cables across is a medium-difficult DIY task or easy for your electricians.

Good luck.
