Multifamily Intercom System Reccs?

Hi, I own a 4 family building in Prospect Heights with an outdated, often non-functioning intercom system which predates my purchase of the building 20 years ago. I want to put in a new video system which will allow tenants to see who is ringing their doorbell, and one which will allow them to buzz someone in.

I spoke with one company rep who mentioned wireless systems, but given that I don’t provide wireless to the building, am not sure how that would work.

Have you installed such a multi-family system in the past couple of years?

Which brand of hardware did you go with?

Do you have an installation company or individual to recommend?

I try to have Capstone Security (718) 536-6993 do all of our installations. When someone first selects a different installer, I often have to hire Sam to correct the improper work. There is a significant disconnect in this market between available technologies and the people installing the nuts and bolts of the systems

Nope it was $6k for the whole building.

It was 7 internal units (our apartment is a duplex so we had one installed upstairs and 1 downstairs) and the front panel.

Also included 2 x new front door strikes installed + keyfobs and cards etc

Obviously this also includes the new “basement control CPU etc” but we didt require and electrical (as it plugged into the existing basement level outlet) or cable to apartments(all of the existing cables were good)

One of the reasons we chose to go with the ABB model was that we were able to get Paxton “key fobs” and “cards” for keyless entry.

We went with the ABB 4.3” M22311 internal displays which are cool because if someone buzzes your apartment and you aren’t home it takes a photo of them with an indicator when you get home (think …answering machine for your front door).

Cost was about 6k for our apartment (6 apt building) and there were able to use the existing wiring no problems.

Happy to answer any specific questions but i’d go with the same vendor/system again.

These days the apple system is easy to install and extremely functional. allows for remote use and doesnt fail!

I’m nowhere near ancient enough to have had standard gauge trains Steve. 027 is O gauge, but with tighter curves and shorter cars than O gauge. Living in a “ junior 4” apartment we didn’t have room for the larger size.

From my research, Aiphone is the most cost effective & reliable hardwired system. Using the current wiring you have, you should be able to put in an audio only system. For video you’d have to run additional wiring from apartment to apartment. Maybe by wireless system, they mean something like a ButterflyMX system, which has no indoor units, it goes straight to a tenants apple/android phone. But you have to pay a monthly/yearly fee, which adds up. Even the wireless systems i’ve seen online that are your typical outdoor unit + indoor units need a 2 conductor cable to power the units.

Some systems, the screw connectors are labled. Door monitor, station 1, 2, 3, door latch.

Want to know what gave people like me comfort with stuff like this? Wiring ho train sets when we were 10 years old. Same thing but we had no directions.

Also – I really appreciate the referral to Lock and Tech. I’ve contacted them. And @DoorsByTheTinkersWagon, thank you. I know that the existing wires will make it easier and cheaper to install a non-video system. I am pricing out both video and non-video systems. Thanks again.
