Mosquito Control in Brooklyn?

Hi all. Like most, the mosquitos in our backyard get bad. Anyone have any tips to help limit mosquitos that have worked? We’ve tried a few things and they help need more help.

Particularly, we are getting a new deck. We want to make sure under the deck doesn’t become a cool, dark, damp place for them to hang out. Any suggestions on that?

Why deprive oneself from an outdoor space in Brooklyn.

We’ve actually had good luck the past two seasons with Thermacell perimeter torches – you set them up in corners of the yard 15 mins or so before venturing out, and they create a zone of protection. Still get the odd bite, but overall way more pleasant. Note that the Thermacell table lantern didn’t work for us, and spraying with cutter became a real chore as it needed to be redone after every rain. Good luck!

All the things reduce but cannot eliminate. spraying /pesticides have been the least effective plus bad for the world. Basically, Sawyer bug repellent works well, fans too, eliminating standing water, mosquito bucket of doom and Spartan traps also reduce but part of their effectiveness is attracting mosquitos, so put them away from where you hang out. FWIW I grew up in a top floor apartment in a 6 story building and we had mosquitoes. AND there were no Asian tiger mosquitoes then.

This thread makes me think building a roof deck would be a good idea for more useable outdoor space – I assume mosquitos don’t venture all the way up to the top of a brownstone (or do they?)

If you can eliminate standing water on your property and your neighbors don’t have any on theirs, this will make a huge difference and go a long way. Fans are also helpful, though bugs, especially the tigers, will find a way to bite in the one spot where the fan is not reaching. Keep in mind spraying also kills all other bugs, including bees. In the months when the mosquitoes are at their worst, I cover myself head to toe when I go outside — hat, gloves, long sleeves, long pants, etc. — during the day and I don’t venture into the backyard at night.

Sadly there are not any great answers. These are the things that we have tried:

– Asking neighbors to be careful about standing water
– Spraying company that comes by 1x/week
– Fans pointed at us to keep them away
– Mosquito Magnet (huge device with propane to attract them)
– Thermacell (portable device)
– Mosquito coils
– Citronella

Sadly none of these actually really work that well. Particularly with the new Asian Tiger mosquitos that are both more annoying/painful and are able to breed without as much standing water.

It is hard to tell for sure but we have found that the spraying does seem to help (combined with coils/thermacell) so we have use of our backyard in evenings up until about mid-June. After that it is a lost cause until mid-Sept, at least for us. Daytimes are a little better but evenings are just impossible.

if you can cut some trees back to put sun over your deck during the day and be sure there is no water under it and maybe that as you build it, you dig some soil out and put sand down (the sand will drain better than clay soil) this might make a very uncomfortable place for them to hang out during the day.

we had a neighbor who’d left a kiddie pool out for months when our son was about two years old and we were quite concerned about mosquitos.

I tried everything and no one measure works
You can have the cleanest yard and one neighbor will be collecting plastic bags or open 55 gallon drums. You can keep them at bay with spraying Cutter (hose attachment) and those smoke sticks or a fan. Don’t use a zapper, I’ll just zap all the nice animals and not mosquitoes.

If you’re building a deck consider making it a screened porch. That should help having some quality time without being attacked non-stop

I think they need water to breed. I am not sure they can become an issue without it. We’ve always had decks on LI and both of my parents have decks now, my mother’s quite large and i cannot say the mosquitos are any worse because of the decks. On LI they simply try to be an all around nuisance in the same way rats are here.
