Missed garbage collection again

We moved into our house about three months ago and our garbage has been ignored on at least five occasions since then – we’re mid-block, with an enormous tree in front of the house and there are always parked cars as well. We’re definitely not packing up the garbage incorrectly – we bought the same can as most people on the block, put it out the evening before just like everyone else. Is it the tree? Are these guys expecting some sort of welcome to the nabe tip? (the house was empty and garbageless for over a year). Do I need a florescent colored can?
I’ve reported it to 311 each time, but you have to wait a full day, and then they don’t always come before the next schedule time. What to do?

Is it garbage or recycling? Our recycling was skipped many a time. (We put it out loose, not bagged, in regular cans set at the curb.) I talked to the guys one day, and there was a very reasonable explanation: They’re moving quickly and look down the block as they go for what to grab. On days our recyclables weren’t above the rim of the can, they probably just didn’t notice that it was still to be collected. They suggested stickering the can and piling recyclables above rim (even if can isn’t full) for reinforcement. It’s worked.

If they have only ignored it intermittently, it’s not a “new resident” issue. If you are complying with the laws on what’s in what bags, etc, it’s most likely because they missed it with cars. Just move it to where it’s more highly visible.

Try to place your bins where there’s a gap in the parked cars even if it’s not in front of your house.

I’d vote that it is most likely your packing. They can tell right away when new people move in, and the sanitation guys always have issues / leave garbage untouched. As if they scrutinize new residents slightly more than existing ones(?). They do look through the semi-transparent white kitchen garbage bags for recyclables, they want boxes in bales, etc. Are you sure you are keeping to the letter of the law on DOB site?

Assuming they are only skipping you and not the whole block, go out there on trash day when they are working your block and talk to them about the issue.
