Mirror in fireplace mantle caving in

The mirror in one of our fireplaces has gotten detached from the wooden mantle. It’s leaning back an inch toward the wall so I’m not concerned about imminent danger but once we are ready to fix, how would we do so? Is this the kind of thing a regular handyman could do? Thanks!

@cate: i have refinished these units and they are pretty tight to the wall/mantle and often made of better wood. this may be a little beyond a glass person who is not really more than that. and the wood will have to come off as the glass is often placed from behind.

OP should post a photo of front and side and any one of us will know if there is glass/panel molding holding it in. i will also ask my glass guy what they do when they run into something beside glass set in simple molding in a door.

as for getting to it from the top, these often have shelves. there is a way to do it yes, but someone wil have to be creative and really thing of other things that may not be in the perview of the glass person or even a cabinet maker.

if the unit is painted and op wishes to keep it that way, it will be easier as some handy person can knock it up and bit and the damage can still be filled/painted.

i am not putting myself forth for this but if the op posts a pic i will take a look. glass guy has a delivery for me and i will talk to him.

Consult with a local glass and mirror repair shop. They make house calls and repair and install window glass, mirrors of all kinds, window screens, and so on.

ok, with all due repect to bob, qucik setting adhesive implies epoxy to me. i would not recommend using epoxy on glass. i have done that and learned the best way there is to learn- through experience. this is what can and very well might happen: the epoxy will form an unyielding bond and then the wood expands or moves with the weather and the glass cracks – especially if you grab it at the edges.

people on here and my glass guy suggest silicone caulk. but how do you get it to hold whilst the caulk is curing? so i was thinking that perhaps you can take that exoandable foam insualtion and blow some in behind the mirror. that might even hold enough that you do not need silicone or anything else.

I’m sure there’s a more professional method, but I’d be tempted to try a quick-setting adhesive on the inside-top of the wooden mantle and a suction cup on the glass to pull the mirror back into position until the glue sets.
