Mini Split Condenser in Front of Building?
Hi,
I am renovating a 3-unit townhouse in Clinton Hill (NOT landmarked). We are installing mini split units throughout the home. We currently have the condensers located in the backyard, however we are revisiting our plans and are thinking of moving the condensers to the front of the house. Does anyone know if the city allows condensers to be placed in the front gated area of a row house? Also, if you an opinion on choosing the front over the back, all feedback is welcome! Thanks.

Or the switches and gear people are putting up for solar over here in queens. That won’t fly down there.
In defense of these in the front of houses, i think i recall someone saying it is ok if a little fence is put in front of it. And my neighbor has one in front and she put shrubs in front of it. We don’t know it is there.
When down low, these are less offensive than through wall a/c units. And as quiet as anything.
About sizing. We are in these 2 story plus basement queens houses, tudors, and my neighbor put one in. He has 36,000 btu and said he wishes he had a little more. He said when cooling just upstairs it is great but when trying to do the first floor and upstairs he felt it something a tad bigger would do better.

“quite unattractive” – as opposed to the usual stuff in front of a townhouse, like trash bins?

All good points! Thank you all for your advice. I think we will keep them in the backyard. Roof is my first choice, but the cost of adding the proper structural support makes it out of our budget.

Technically a few permits are needed for any install of mini-splits, but the roof install adds to the complications.

The best location is on the roof. If that’s not possible then backyard. Front yard is not good for your ‚curb appeal‘

That sounds quite unattractive. Also, would there be a danger of someone stealing the units?
