Metal siding in Sunset Park houses

I’ve noticed some houses in Sunset Park with exteriors that are clad in metal, made to look like stone or brick. But it’s not modern aluminum siding–it appears to be the original exterior, because several houses on the block have the same thing, and because there are very historical-looking flourishes and details, also metal. Is anyone familiar with this building material and style? Just curious. [Screen Shot 2021-05-08 at 2](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:4Nvw:screenshot20210508at2.46.31pm.png.jpg)

It’s definitely metal. I was visiting a friend who rents one of these houses, so I was able to get up close. If you tap on it you can hear a very hollow/metallic sound; you can also see the seams and little rivets where the pieces of metal come together. I did some research, and apparently sheet metal facades were a trend for both row houses and storefronts in the same era as decorative tin ceilings.

I would have thought they are brick and stone that has been painted. Do you know for sure they are metal?

FWIW my 1899 PLG house, and many others in the row, have similar rear bays made of (I think) stamped galvanized sheet metal.
