Metal Double-Pane Replacement Window Recommendation/Price?

I need to replace a couple of old double-pane replacement windows that have fogged up. Looking for either someone to just replace the glass section or go with new windows. I got one quote to replace just the glass and it was more than I originally spent for the windows so open to either route. Thanks.

watch out for the cheap one as well. MAYBE THEY ARE THE GUY THE OTHERS SEND THE ORDERS TO???? Read reviews when you encounter something like this before you jump.

I look forward to your report. I actually called a window place (Benra) and got a quote of $80 per sash. Now that just sounds too cheap so I’m perplexed.

and i am sorry i will add this and then i will go: as someone who makes stuff, when i encounter things that appear comparatively expensive, i question what goes into making them. as a business owner, if there is a way around that expense and i can introduce it to people like you, i can make some money on it. my thought on the double pane glass is that it requires some very special equipment to make it up and a careful process, hence the price. now that you brought this up here, i will ask the glass guy and see what he says. and the next time someone asks on here, i can tell them more about it and how the cost is justified.

this sort of thing is on the edge of my wheelhouse and it helps me to know.

ok. i have not had a double pane unit made up in some years now. but my thinking was the last time i did it, it was about $150. the local glass shop has no control over that as they have to send it out to be done by someone who makes these units up. perhaps there is one in the city who does that and you and i and bob would be wise to find it. i cannot ask my main glass supplier to divulge such information.

i have to tell you the truth though, as i was thinking about this, i realized part of this was going to be pricey and i thought of all the customers who used to call me for small things because they began to do something like this and ran into that “price” and they hoped a contractor – a small contractor – had a way around it. we don’t. unless we can find that one shop who does all that work the other shops send to them and they are willing to talk to us, we get stuck paying retail like everyone else.

i can tell you this much as my glass guy left the label on a tempered double pane unit he had done for me once; it came from a shop in yapank long island. i asked him about that “yapank?” i mean what the f goes on in yapank? the glass guy told me the tempering can not be done in the city as the blast ovens used to heat the glass make a lot of noise (i suppose along with the belching cows?)

I’m perfectly willing to take the sash out (I know how to do it) but the quotes I’m getting of $150 per sash (or $300 per full window) even if I bring them in seem high to me.

bob always seems to know the most reasonable, headache free (i like headaches, they keep my business running), way to go on things but i can give you an alternative. if you know how to remove the sashes you can take them to a glass guy. if you are really handy, you can pull the sashes and open the frames (i would be worried about the condition of the hardware holding the frames together and perhaps damaging a screw) and take the glass out and bring it to the glass guy or measure it and order it. i would let the glass guy measure it because if you get it wrong, its on you and not him.

my glass guy does this in the shop for people all the time. he has to send out for the sealed glass unit but he will disassemble the frame and reassemble it. they will let you take it home for the week or so it takes to get the sealed units.

i use major lock and glass in ridgewood. if i were you i would check around closer to your own home.

if your glass is thicker, they may be able to make up triple panes.

being in door service myself and handling all sorts of glass – i ncluding double pane units, i would be pulling the sash and doing this myself. (i am not putting myself out there to do this).

FWIW I used a company called Prestige Windows to do this two or three years ago.Their number is 718.686.9300. They replaced a cloudy triple pane glass with double panes–they couldn’t do triple. This company does good work; I’ve been having them service my 40+ year old aluminum windows for years (mainly replacing balances). The glass replacement was rather expensive.
