Metal deck contractor suggestions?

Hi All,

I’m looking to get a back yard deck installed in my Brooklyn home. Probably needs to be metal (or other “non-combustible” material) because it will be up to my property line. Contractor would will take care of permits etc.

Wondering if anybody had suggestions for contractors could do this kind of job?

It ugly, obtrusive, blocks sun and its partially on my property. The fence is about 5 foot shy on my land across three yards (5*50ft). Every home owner since we have been here has been informed of this and granted permission to use it when the properties changed hands. This guy is new (under 5 yrs). When he started building it, I reminded him about the line and he did not have permission to build on it. Also made him aware he had to keep it back 3 foot from the line, & he needed plans and permits. He offered to buy the plot, but I’m not selling. He built it anyway. He also built an additional story on a landmarked building (blocking sun). There’s a stop work order on the property that was in place apparently from the additional floor construction.

basemint–Personally I’d have done nothing about a deck that doesn’t endanger my home, but I think you’ve done about all you could by complaining to DOB. Presumably the offending neighbor knows that you can get away with not letting DOB inspectors in, so you’ve seen how effective such a complaint is likely to be. Perhaps you could file a nuisance lawsuit, but that seems a bit much.

I’m having an issue with someone behind me who built a deck no permits, out of code etc. Called DOB and filed complaints which were closed due to no access.
Are there any suggestions on how to get this dealt with?

A foundation of 42-48″ deep concrete (with rebar reinforcement) filled holes (called footings) breaking ground to the frost line point, support the deck.
Steel,concrete and wood specialty contractors coordinated as a team – to install a wood floor 3′ inwardly from lot lines, gratings on the 3′ margins, at an 8′ depth for light source to enter underneath to garden level windows, and 42″ H. railings – are a bit unique, but can be found.

There are a number of established teamwork efforts out there. One of many ,with a large net: Sketch & Hammer.com. “Teamwork makes the dream work”!
I don’t think contractors/G.C.’s can pull permits unless in sync with an architect’s filing process.

Oh as to material, Three feet on either side of the neighbors has to be metal . You can put the stairs to your yard on one side and on the other you will have a grating , with wood covering the rest. . Ipe mahogany is super dense and hard to ignite, but expensive. There has to be a 4 foot high railing around it
They don’t allow the kind of deck people used to build themselves anymore: usually redwood with various kinds of support and low rails. A concrete foundation is required now too if I am not mistaken.

Yes everyone is busy right now.

You might need several people: an architect, a concrete installer, an iron works and a company or carpenter to install the planks.
We found that people who build decks will do one or two of these but no one does all three.

Try to get the job started with the design and foundation and get the rest lined up for next March.

I will tell you that I reached out to a couple of the deck design/build contractors I found on Brownstoner and after providing them with detailed information (site plans, photos, etc.) I received zero responses. Everybody is too busy to be bothered.
