Measuring air flow in buildings and rooms with no HVAC

Hi all, I teach at a very large public high school in a very old building with only windows for ventilation. Air flow, as we know, is critical to dispersing (cough cough) certain airborne viruses. The DOE’s reports on ventilation are useless, since they do not measure airflow or report on air changes per hour (two per hour is safe, according to the CDC). My general feeling is that we will *probably* be ok, since the windows are very large, but I would like actual data.

I understand that I need an anemometer to measure air flow, and in particular a hot wire anemometer that will measure air flow at very slow rates. Ideally, I’d like to measure varying air flow rates over time. Anyone have any recommendations for particular devices, models, etc?

Thanks – I’ve read that having two box window fans, one pushing air in, and the other out, can work, but yes, you have to be attentive to seating patterns.

floor and table fans aren’t recommended in spaces occupied by multiple people trying to social distance – with the exception of window fans – which also shouldn’t be blowing directly on anyone.

We recently got an ordinary floor fan that turned out to be unexpectedly powerful and it’s been remarkably effective at moving air in and out of the house on three levels. Seems like two or three fans positioned around the room with the windows open should do the trick. However, our fan is so loud it is definitely hard to hear people talking. Maybe you could find some quiet models. Wirecutter and other sites have fan recommendations.

Maggie – yes, we’re doing that, at least for the windows that work. Some have to be propped up with textbooks (your tax $$$ at work). But we still need data.

i can’t provide the recommendation you’re looking for but i would encourage you to consider opening both top and bottom sashes if your windows are double hung and using window fans, if available, to encourage greater rates of air change in the room.
