Manual Dumb Waiter Restoration needed
We are looking for someone capable of rebuilding our dumbwaiter – specifically we’d like a manual rope pulley system (which was the original system) set up. Can anyone recommend a company/contractor who could help with this? We’re not interested in installing a motorized unit. Thank you!

Cate, hooking the pulley system up is probably child’s play for anyone who has hoisted material or rigged a sailboat. Op can figure this out themselves. The issue for contractors may be liability concerns with such a device.

The dumbwaiters in apartment buildings are enclosed with metal, probably for fire reasons. The ones in houses are not. Whether or not the dumbwaiter is working, the shaft is still a fire hazard, as is any airshaft such as off the bathrooms, or the house’s staircase. Re getting it working again, if you have all the parts in place, possibly all that is needed is oiling the metal parts and attaching the heavy ropes? Wonder if you can find an old manual or catalog or something from the era. Our dumbwaiter has been turned into closets on three levels, with boards inserted for the floors/ceilings, and a board closing off the attic access. Unfortunately, as you might expect, this area is also a popular one for mice. We’ve closed all the holes inside each of the closets with mesh/concrete and caulk, as appropriate, on each of the levels. We have to re-do the mouse proofing every five years or so. Guessing your dumbwaiter is more useful, perhaps going from the kitchen to t he dining room on two levels. I think ours may have been used for coal and runs on all floors in a hallway in a two-family. Good luck.

my grandparents had a laundry chute in their house. my grandfather was also a volunteer fireman. when they were still alive and i was still in my youth, i recall my grandparents telling me that those things had been outlawed due to the fire hazard. they could probably put this stuff in with fire doors installed on fusible links.
i know one large apartment building in another jurisdiction that had a dumbwaiter that ran between all of the apts. it had a sprinkler head mounted inside it at each floor.
i suppose those still extant in the city are grandfathered.

FWIW, I grew up in a home with a laundry shute that was boxed in by plywood. My mother was forever anxious about it after someone told her it was a real fire hazard because it’s a direct line to every floor. That said, she never did anything about it. Probably the cost.

this is a first on here, me thinks. it is probably fairly easy to repair something like that and they still make muilti sheave block and tackle systems today, it that is the pulley system in this (what i am saying is modern stuff can be retrofitted in if the old stuff is bad). Before you go too far into this, google “block and tackle system” and see what comes up. i do wonder if these things fall under elevator codes.
