Management Company Obliged to Communicate Break-Ins and NYPD Investigation?

There was forced entry last week at 202 8th St. in Gowanus, which is managed by Werber Management / Real Estate and leased by Heller Organization. I learned secondhand on Sat., 10/3/20 that the building was broken into twice by the same person on Monday and Wednesday and that an NYPD investigation was underway. The doorman was reluctant to share any information when I asked about a busted bike room door I happened to see, but he eventually said someone got into the building (and came across to me as very cagey about sharing any details).

I asked Werber for information about the crime today and asked what responsibility they have to inform residents about safety issues. In the meantime, do good management companies generally tell their tenants about issues that are directly related to the personal safety of their tenants? Many residents I spoke to today were shocked to learn from me that there were two break-ins last week and that Werber has not informed us about them. What can tenants do to ensure communications from management companies about safety information directly related to the building?

If it is a Co-Op or Condo Building, the boards will notify owners. If you are in a rental building there is no “obligation” for a landlord / management company to notify tenants.
A few years ago a had a rash of break-ins in one of my buildings & the Police specifically told me to NOT notify tenants. They eventually arrested a cleaning ladies brother of one of my tenants. Burglaries are often “inside” jobs so it is always difficult to notify or no notify while investigations are still going on.
