Mail Slot in Door?
Hi, does anyone know where to find the following items: a through-the-door mail box with a mail slot outside and a box inside with a key to lock/open. And a DOUBLE doorbell plate (2 apartments), nice looking with space for the names. Thanks in advance.

Hi! Thanks for asking. Right now we think we willl be buying a very plain locking metal box and cutting a hole in its back for a mailbox collar . It will be work but better than putting a hole in the masonry for a mail chute. I will update.

Can you update when you figure out how/where you’ll design the solution yourselves? I have the same goal and just haven’t found anything that fits the bill.

An update: We received the through-the-door box from digital buyer.om.but sent it right back. It proved to be unsatisfactory. Inside the mail chute were long metal teeth acting as a baffle . We tried dropping a handful of mail into it before installing and found the teeth were perfect for shredding up any magazines, papers, journals etc. that you try to insert. It is also vey heavy. We will have to make something ourselves.
Thanks again for your help, even though it didn’t work out for us.

Hi brokelin.
Thank you for your kind suggestions and help.
The slim mailboxes make it really hard for the letter carrier to fit the mail in especially a magazine or something. It also needs a baffle or some other device to keep someone’s hand out of it. We did like the thicker box you suggested on digitalbuyer but found the same box on Amazon– with shipping it was cheaper. Will update this thread when we receive it So if you are tired of picking your mail up from the floor, please return in a few days and we will let y’all know how it went. .
The doorbells did need to be brass because we have lovely new brass door hardware.Previously we have bought the plated button plates fromhardware stores. They remain nice looking for a few years then become unsightly and you cannot polish them. I guess. also, I should have said we are “upgrading” a little and want something nice that we do not have to keep replacing all the time.
We wound up ordering 2 separate, very small cast brass plates from Baldwin. which will fit atop our narrow (1-1/2 in. wide) door molding perfe ctly. (Another issue we had was that the bell plate had to fit over a bumpy victorian molding in the door casing). This plate we bought has no space to put a name but I will probably get a couple of small brass numerals to mark the floor number on each bell.
Thanks again!

I wrote before what to google to find what you wanted. No, the boxes don’t ALL come with chutes that make the installation too chunky to interfere with the door opening. If you google what I noted above in my first reply, you will come up with options without chutes that are quite slim- just the depth of the mailbox. Here’s one:
https://www.digitalbuyer.com/durabox-d500-through-door-locking-drop-box.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3d_3nIez3AIVAUCGCh0FugE_EAQYAiABEgLgrPD_BwE
You didn’t specify you were looking for a solid brass bell/nameplate. Here’s one (again, easily to find by googling) that is polished brass – it doesn’t say if that is a brass plating (which I suspect any brass ones made today, that is, not antiques, will be, though you could have someone custom make one for you) or solid brass (which it doesn’t really need to be), but you could call them and ask.

As to the doorbell, the sites checked have lovely stuff but do not sell solid brass double door bells for apartments. I found a brass triple doorbell plate on EBay, if anyone needs one.

I have indeed investigated most of the sites recommended but I appreciate the willingness to hrlp.
Should clarify this question a bit more. Now that it’s Sunday and I have more time.
In our row-house area almost everyone has a mail slot through the main entry door. A few take their mail at the entrance to the English basements, which is what I want, and many of those people mount s mailbox on their masonry walls near the steps down. I don’t want to do that if I can avoid it.
I can go that way, if I have to, but feel it would be more secure to have a slot in the basement door. That way the mail would be better protected from weather and I could collect the mail without actually going outside. I need to figure out how to attach a collection box behind a mail slot on a metal door.
A slot in the parlor floor door on our house would have to be 18 inches from the floor since there is a large glass pane in the door. originally the outer parlor floor entrance did not lock. The mailman entered and used a key yo open a brass mailbox in the vestibule. With the 20th century cri me waves came outer door locks and mail slots. The mail lands on the floor unless you hook up a collection basket behind it.
But back to the issue. My outer basement door is iron and has bars. Most of the thru the door boxes that open from the back (this is important) were designed for putting into a thick door or wall (like a bank drop box) They come with a chute and would require something like wood? between the door and the collection box to support the chute. Things would become very bulky and make it hard to open the basement door fully.
I was wondering if anyone had encountered the problem and what you did about your mail.
Thanksin advance.

I know how hard this can be, from when I was looking for a brass-plated 4-unit mailbox for my building’s entryway – that took hours of searching. Your requests? One minute on google.
Google “mailbox slot with locking box behind” – brings up a few of exactly what you describe. If you want it in brass, take it to a local shop that brass plates things.
Your doorbells? Google “Doorbell and name plate” and hit “images” and see the one Newegg has made by Lee Electric. I’m sure there are more – but you get the idea – use google.

Be aware some mail people refuse to deliver to mail slots, declaring them not in compliance

These two places should have the mailbox items: www.mailboxworks.com and www.gotitwholesale.com/mailboxes. For the doorbell (and maybe mailbox) hardware a great resource is https://ccbrass.com
