Not sure about a 10 year replacement cycle for cedar fencing. We dont maintain at all, and while it is greying, it has not deteriorated one iota in the 10 years we have had. This is a standard cedar fence which alternating slats which allows air to flow through. Not sure what is going to rot in an all cedar fence (attached to pressure treated 4 x 4s.) The fence is not resting against the ground.

Our cedar deck, admittedly a much higher quality cedar, is almost 20 years old and with a little maintenance, is doing fine. There has been some deterioration where nails allowed water to infiltrate the wood and it has rotted; we have been able to replace these pieced.

I think the decision is an aesthetic one, with some environmental considerations, too. My neighbor’s PVC fence is warping and mildewing, and its plastic. Not something I want next to my garden.

I did some research about different fences ( wood vs pvc vs composite) recently. My conclusion is as follows: Wood fences look good but do not last long and need maintenance. Both pvc and composite fences are durable and easy to maintain. Wood grain PVC and composite fences are at the same price level, which are 4 times the price of white pvc. I dont feel comfortable paying up just for the look, not for functionality. I decide to purchase white pvc fences and do a paint hack to make them look modern.

@MDR: This is a good point, but I would guess that it is somewhat more nuanced since the PVC fence will last many times longer and is recyclable while there is an environmental impact to repeatedly replacing the wood fence. I don’t know which way this cuts if the PVC fence lasts for 40 years and you do eventually recycle it vs. replacing the cedar fence 4 times in the same period (the fence we replaced was about 10 years old and completely rotted)..

In case you care, wood is a natural, renewable resource while PVC is derived from fossil fuels.

I second the rec for Illusions PVC fences. PVC fences usually look cheap and ugly to me but I just installed their faux Driftwood color in my yard and it looks great. Bracci Fence did the install. We replaced our rotted out cedar fence with an very convincing pvc copy made by Illusions Fence. It was much more expensive than cedar, but it is so realistic that you can’t tell until you are close enough to touch it. We found that the light color is very convincing (see second picture on this page: https://illusionsfence.com/incredible-pvc-vinyl-wood-grain-fence-images/) but that some of the darker colors are not as good.

The advantage is longevity. The disadvantage is cost, but I would do it again.
