Looking for contractor to build backyard office shed

Hi, I’m looking for a contractor who has experience building a backyard office shed. I don’t want to buy a pre-fab shed so I want to find someone who can help design it. Thanks for any leads.

I agree, there are some awesome looking prefabs out there – but when you add everything up, (foundation, shipping, assembly, finishing, electricity) the cost is 20-30K for an 8×10 shed. There’s got to be a way to do it for less. One company told me that a disassembled shed (what we would need for a Brooklyn yard) costs 30% more than an assembled shed.

Steve is right on that – it totally depends on your neighborhood/neighbors. Some places, you even LOOK at the wrong window and someone calls DOB or landmarks.

In our neighborhood, you’d have to build a five story addition completely out of toothpicks and tar, douse it with gasoline, and install a fire pit next to it before someone would call. And THEn only if you pissed them off.

and not mounted to a foundation. I followed the laws on mine as I was new to my nabe and worried but since I built mine, a neighbor put one up that is the size of a one car garage and has a bay door and a peak rook that someone could put a storage loft in. so it depends on the neighbors as to how far you want to push the “shed”. electric is a no no as well.

Those sheds look cool but keep in mind that the city requires backyard sheds to be a max of 7′-6″ tall and 3′ from property lines, and 121 sf max – otherwise it will need permits as a new building.

don’t knock the pre fabs. Some of them come pre cut and can be carried through a house in pieces. also, I built my own as you are doing and it ended up costing me twice as much as a pre fab and the only thing I did different was lay a double ply treated plywood floor.
