Looking for bathroom venting solution!

I have an old Brooklyn two-family limestone and the tiny bathrooms on each floor have no ventilation at all, and no way to vent to an outside wall. However, next to the bathroom there is a lightwell that goes up to a skylight in the roof. Above the shower there is a little window you can open to let some steam into the lightwell. Probably not the best idea but it’s always been that way. Now we are renovating the first floor bathroom and I’m wondering if there’s any way to run a duct up to a skylight. Is there such a thing as a skylight with a duct vent? The only one I’ve found is only 10″ and I don’t want to lose that much light and have to rebuild my roof. Thanks for any advice!

The windows and the light well are the venting. That’s how the bathrooms received light and air. You will find the light well is open to the attic. So whether or not the skylight is vented, the air is vented into the attic and out through other vents in the roof. (We already had a few vents and added some more last time we redid the roof.) AFAIK you can’t run a duct vent into the air shaft that two other bathrooms are using because it would block their venting. What exactly are you venting with a duct in the first floor bathroom? If it’s a gas dryer, there are rules about length and number of turns. Maybe speak to an architect, plumber, roofer, and/or code consultant, etc., about code.

Oh those old baths which truly deserve the name “water closet”! In our place, which sounds similar, we had an air shaft to the roof, and an exhaust fan that vents into the crawl space below the roof. We are adding a transom over the door. that can be tilted. We are closing the air shaft and putting a louvered vent in the shower area as well.
