Looking for a Structural Engineer...

The team I’ve been working with for a 3rd floor addition can only recommend structural engineers who are giving me insanely high bids. Does anybody have a reasonably priced engineer to recommend? Thanks in advance!

ROFL, I have no scott rage. I have had no bad dealings with him and in a real pinch, I got some decent and free advice from him years by showing up, as i described, at 7am, fully caffeinated and ready to have a 30 second conversation at lightening speed. It’s like talking to the guy in the old fedex commercials. Really a slice of old New York.

Plenty of folks recommend Scott for filings and he knows what he is doing with them and with DOB. But the OP is looking for structural engineering help with construction of a vertical extension. I just don’t think that is what Scott does. But, like i said, OP can go and find out directly in almost no time, if he follows my instructions.

Minor point, but RE: “His company is up the stoop on Atlantic Avenue across from Keyfood—do you want to get literal and call that Cobble Hill?” That most certainly IS Cobble Hill, rather that Brooklyn Heights. The late Everett Ortner attributed the start of the “brownstone revival” to the time in the late ’50s when middle class people renting in Brooklyn Heights crossed Atlantic Ave. to buy cheap houses in that South Brooklyn slum across the street, for which an 18th Century name was later revived 🙂

To the OP, L_Studio: Thete are 40 titles for an Engineer….Scott Schnall’s father was an Archtect. He & Scott, PE understood/understand the ins & outs of Brownstone buildings. Just so you can form you’re own opinion of the man’s expertise to help you out, you can email him or walk into his office anytime 8 to 5 and this man, AND his STAFF of specialists for whatever your quest is , will take care of you. These 2: “Slope farm” & “no permits” sound terribly caught up with “Scott-Rage” from their own intimidations which goes both ways with anybody you approach for advise (Dr.’s , Exoediters, Car salesmaen) if you can’t be nice. No need to brace yourself to visit Scott unless you give the man attitude. I have to agree with no-permits on this one. Scott is as expeditious and cost-effective at getting things drawn and filed with DOB and gaining DOB approval as anyone. But if what you need is a structural engineer for a project because it needs, ahem,. structural engineering, Scott is not your guy.

But if the OP is not convinced, go down to Scott’s Atlantic Ave office at, say, 7am (the only time you can really ask him a question, and make sure you are really, really caffeinated before you go), and ask him if he can do the structural engineering you need. You will get an answer in about 5 seconds.

@carriagehouse99 you have no idea what you’re talking about. scott is not a structural engineer. if you went to him for a structural matter, he might handle the filing, but he will involve a structural engineer.
