looking for a pocket door

Hi we are looking for a pocket door for our greenpoint house, ideally 40 x 80 with five panels (the house has a five panel mahogany pocket door in another room and would like to match). Open to variations. Anyone have a suggestion?

The ideal stroke of luck would probably be to get pocket doors that came from the same spot in a house on your row.

There are lots of places to look. You can go vintage or custom.

For vintage, eBay and other sites that sell salvage material , online or in person, have plenty of them, as well as their hardware. Olde Goode things. Columbia Salvage,. There are lots.

Oldies come in a variety of nonstandard sizes and thicknesses. You must be sure the doors you buy fit your rough opening , more or less. 80 in doors are harder to find. than tall doors. Be aware that your opening might need adjustment , for any of its dimensions, or you may have to cut the door. I don’t think it is a good idea to cut an old door, especially if it has a track.

You must ask the seller m, or check yourself, if the door is straight, and also if it has been in a fire. Doors that come from a less than ideal storage situation I.e. exposed to damp, should be viewed with suspicion. Certain of our local salvage places are pretty careless about that.

You would also have to strip the salvage and pay shipping, which adds much to the cost, possibly making it not worth it.

We had our doors made for us. Any compan y that makes doors to order can help. Be prepared as they can cost $1000 or more.’ They came out well but they do not look old.

As to hardware, I happen to love the thunderous rolling sound of the old type rollers that run on a track. You can find the old rollers easily. At salvage places. Often on these there was some rubber around the wheels which has hardened. But with the popularity of barn doors there are many new options, some very quiet.
