Living room ceiling light or fan

I am looking for a ceiling fixture that would be appropriate for a living room apartment. Building was built in late 1920s/early 1930s.. Appreciate the input.

Demolition Depot on East 125th Street is great for architectural salvage and they always have lovely old lights. Check out their website for some of what they have in stock. If you have more money to burn, Remains Lighting also has gorgeous old fixtures. Good luck!

It’s also worth watching eBay for stuff with a low “buy-it-now” price as opposed to a low opening bid. When you search, sort things so that “newly listed” is first.

You can also look up completed sales on liveauctioneers, and I’ve learned a lot doing so. You should also be sure to calculate buyer’s premiums and shipping costs, if you plan to bid on an item on that site. But that having been said, you can sometimes get amazing stuff for very little, depending on who’s interested in what at any given time. I’ve gotten several nineteenth century victorian brass or sometimes bronze chandeliers at local auction houses on Live Auctioneers. for almost nothing…(around $150 for stuff that would have an opening bid of $500 on ebay) . Guess that’s due to the sheer volume of stuff on liveauctioneers, and what I’m looking for isn’t necessarily fashionable (they aren’t mid century modern),. But the pieces sure are gorgeous…and I picked them up in person and got them home in a cab, or sometimes on the subway.

Rejuvenation sells high quality, period reproduction light fixtures. Not inexpensive but nice stuff.

That liveauctioneers site looks interesting; I hadn’t known of it before. However, if you want to go with vintage fixtures do look up completed sales on eBay, to get an idea about actual selling prices, before bidding anywhere.

Definitely go period and rewire. Once you know the look you want, I’d go to www.liveauctioneers.com, open an account (if you don’t already have one), and start searching daily on “chandelier,” or “pan fixture,” or whatever search terms work best. As long as you can control yourself if the bidding goes too high for your wallet, you may well find the best deal at a live auction. I’ve furnished my entire house with rewired period pieces, and got ’em rewired at The Lamp Doctor, on Coney Island Avenue. Repros won’t hold a candle to ’em….and the originals were a lot cheaper than new.

Search on google for “two pan light fixture” and “three pan light fixture” and it will pull up images of typical 1920s lights suitable for a living room (three or more bulbs) or bedroom (two bulbs). These were considered “Colonial” style. A Craftsman house would have, you guessed it, something similar but more Craftsman. Are you sure it is 1920s/30s? City records are inaccurate before 1936 or so.

Big Reuse, on 9th Street, just before the bridge over the Gowanus canal, might also have some appropriate ’20s–’30s fixtures; they’re hit and miss, but it’s a fascinating place. They have a parking lot.

Appropriate as in fitting and working, or historically appropriate? If the former there are any number of places, including the big box stores. If you want a real period fixture there are many offered for sale on eBay, or Etsy. Old fixtures in need of re-wiring are often less expensive than new ones, especially, in my experience, from Midwestern dealers. Re-wiring an old American light fixture is simple and a good hardware store, like Leopoldi’s, in Park Slope, can sell you any fittings [aka “hickies” ] you might need to fit your ceiling box.
