Leaking/Clogged Vent Stack
We had a leak in our kids 2nd floor bedroom where an exposed pipe that leads to the roof vent was dripping right where it enters the ceiling. We have seen the leak happen once during a freezing rain a few days ago. We have had leak trouble in the ceiling right by that vent stack pipe in the past that was seemingly fixed when we had the roof replaced and the vent stack re-flashed.
We called our roofers (under warranty) they ran a garden hose on the roof around the stack and it didn’t leak. They then ran the water into the vent stack pipe and saw that it backed up and overflowed onto the roof and did not visibly drain. We were able to recreate the leak in my kid’s room when the roofers were filling the vent stack with water. They diagnosed it as a leaking vent pipe combined with a clog that was holding water in the pipe. They tried to snake it, but the snake hit something solid that they couldn’t get through and since they aren’t plumbers I/they decided we should leave it be for now and consult someone who knows vent stacks better than they do. (we have also had a sewage smell problem in the basement that we have been trying to diagnose that we are now thinking might be related to a blocked vent stack…) The blockage in the stack that they encountered was seemingly no more than 2 or 3 feet into the vent stack from the roof, likely right around the place where the leak in the pipe was happening in the kid’s bedroom.
We have had a nightmare keeping this corner of the house dry. While trying to hunt down leaks we repointed the chimney, sealed gaps between the siding and the chimney, and had a new roof put on. The roofers had to come back and replace the flashing around this same vent stack once already under the warranty and it seems nuts to me that the very same vent stack would now also have some kind of leak in the piping not related to the roof…
Any advice on where to go next?

The vent pipe that you see on the roof is often wider than the vent pipe within the house. In most brownstones it tapers from 4″ to 2″ just below the roof surface. So most likely your blockage is right there, probably from some animal going in there or leaves or a plastic bag or other things falling in over time. If this is the case it would be easiest to snake from the top (at the roof) and pull the plug right out. That way you wont have to cut or repair the pipes.

Update.
Drain guys seem to think it’s likely rust buildup in the old cast iron stack and that they would drill into the exposed segments of the cast iron pipes above the blockage (in the second floor bedroom) and in the boiler room below the blockage and work on grinding it out. Hopefully would be done in less than a full day so long as the pipes were in good enough condition to handle the rust grinding. No one really seems excited about going up on the roof so it’s good the pipe is exposed in several places in the house!

I’d suggest approaching it as a drain cleaning job first. You know the vent is blocked. If that takes care of the problem, great! If not, move on to plan B, which hopefully won’t be necessary.

Thanks Colonialrevival. Is this a drain cleaning type of job? or is there another specialty we should look into?

Wow, this does sound like an odyssey. Unfortunately, I can’t recommend tradespeople because I work for Brownstoner. There are mom and pop plumbing outfits in Brooklyn who focus on repairing/replacing/installing drains/vents/sewers in houses (not the fellows who replace the mains under the street) and you should talk to some of them. This should actually be a relatively simple and quick fix — highly unlikely you will need to replace your vent pipe. Good luck!

That is helpful Bob. Thanks. Let’s hope clearing the blockage solves the issue, because I suspect it’s a loose fitting based on where i see the leak coming from and I’d rather not disassemble and refit the pipes.
I would think if it was a dead bird or rodent, the snake would have turned it into carcass smoothie. What could stop a snake dead in its tracks!?
Any recommendations for plumbers willing to get up on a roof?

I think this might actually be good news. You may have found the cause of the mysterious leak and you can now deal with it.
FWIW we had a leak from a vent pipe when we first bought our house, long ago. It turned out the when the house was built, on 1899, a carpenter drove a nail into a piece of molding, inside a top floor bedroom closet. That nail penetrated the lead vent pipe inside the wall. The leak ONLY manifested itself when there was a blockage that caused water to backup and rise within the pipe. Opening the wall and soldering that hole solved the problem.
