lead paint on stairs?

The stairs from the parlor floor up to the 2nd floor in our house have old and ugly carpet on them. I want to tear out the carpet and see how the stairs look. If they are in good enough shape, I’d like to get them sanded/painted (i.e. not put on more carpet), but if they aren’t in great shape, I’ll get new carpet.

When I pulled back the carpet on the top stair, I saw paint that hasn’t been very popular (mustard yellow) since before lead was remove from paint. Do I need to take any special precautions if it’s lead paint?

We sanded our stairs that contained lead paint and it was a huge mistake. Our lead levels were 30,000 in that area, legal limit is 40. The best thing is to remove with a safe method like a heat gun at correct temp, peel away, or other wet method. If you have questions I would recommend Luke at Brooklyn Lead.
