Landmarked Window Replacement

Need to replace windows in my landmarked house. I have two bids coming in roughly same price. Kolbe heritage Sterling and Marvin Ultimate Wood. Kolbe are factory painted and have a concealed jamb which I like. Marvin of course also have a great reputation.

Does anyone around here have an opinion on either?

Windows We Are installed Kolbe and the windows as well as the experience was delightful. I was terrified of the whole thing but they made it super easy. I am now enjoying my wooden windows…

I think they are both good windows. Do you have a company that will be handling the installation? I say it is always best to go with the company your installer prefers coupled with your opinion of course!

I have Kolbe double hung windows on my weekend house. They are the ultra series, which perhaps are not landmark-compliant as the exterior is anodized. But the house is on salt water and now 12 years old, and the windows and finish have held up well in a hostile environment.

resident2 said it all: “the key is, who is installing them?”

i worked for three different window installers; during high school, before college, and during college. I NEVER comment on these high end window on here because i have never installed one and feel i am not qualified to speak. But i am qualified to amplify what resident2 asked: out of the three installers i worked for – the first one was at the top of his game and did everything correct (he taught me a lot; that bit about over tightening screw on the hardi board post, that comes from him); the second one was an older man retired from a civil service job and could give a crap about learning new things and how to do them right and really taught me very little; the last installer i worked for was sort of between the two but even they had issues. when i got hired by the last contractor, my first job with them was driving around and making adjustments to the windows they had installed (i never saw that with the first contractor i worked for). all this means is out of three different successful contracto rs, you can get three different skillsets and mindsets. if marvin and kolbe vet their installers and provide training, you have a leg up.

after working in buildings doing things such as installing windows and doors, rebuilding doors, working as a hands-on building mechanic and supervisory person in commercial buildings and sourcing contractors for parapit wall rebuilds, reroofing, office build outs and operating boilers, inspecting commercial fire systems, I am adding to my long list of education and qualifications and becoming a licensed home inspector. if you think i go on too much here when i write, wait until I begin talking as i look at the house you want to buy; my intention is not only to meet the requirements of written report but to teach homeowners what they need to know going forward over a period of year and help them prioritize.

Both are good windows. The key is who is installing them? The installation is where they can get messy. Do not let a general contractor install them, go with a company that only installs the make & brand you choose, all day every day.
