Hi all,

We’re in landmark area and looking to replace our windows. Any recommendations for a contractor and/or vendor please? Also any recommendations on type/style of window?

NeoGrec, Pella has a limited lifetime warranty, as you are the original purchaser. They may be willing to do something for you, I would call them.
I never had an issue with Pella, they were always good to deal with, but then we have only used their “Monumental” line for large window projects in manhattan, none of their residential windows.

As far as window manufacturers I think it more depends on the quality (and price) of the window. All the manufacturers have lower and higher priced lines. I have Andersen 400 series on my house because we wanted red oak on the interior to match the rest of the woodwork, they were not cheap. Neither was the arched window I got for under my stoop, but the look of the oak was well worth it and I am very happy with the windows.

We recently did a project with Jeld-Wen where they agreed to put in wire glass on the outer panes for a loft building in manhattan (per Landmarks requirements) custom color frames as well, they were very pleasant to work with on this difficult project and I was happy with the quality of the windows.

For a me ssy, difficult project like replacing windows I would only buy the highest quality window that that particular manufacturer offers, it’s not worth it in the long run to go cheap here.

If you do have your original windows it’s worth it to find a carpenter or woodworker who is willing to futz around with them, and add storm windows made to fit your existing window exterior size, you can get custom colors as well.

@booisgolden, I had a similar situation with a Marvin dealer trash talking the windows. Turns out, that dealer had been terminated by Marvin. I have nothing but good things to say about Marvin windows except that they are expensive.

Heights Historic is who we used. Kolbe windows. Majesta Double Hung. All wood and not cheap but they do tilt in for cleaning. Two person job as they are large. Had an issue and Kolbe can out to fix.

Historical must have changed a lot since a lot of people used them on here. They must have been great when they were ez tilt but we did not have same experience only a couple of years ago.

Marvin sent us straight to historical when we asked them for referral, and a ton of people on here recommended them here., mainly when they were ez tilt. So we go to historical to look. Younger salesperson, I’m assuming a second gen owner kid, then proceeds to TRASH Marvin on no uncertain terms. Like all out, “Marvin sucks”. Went on and on about this one part on the line then known at their best. Said this one part broke on EVERY SINGLE WINDOW they installed. Not exaggerating., they claimed it broke on every single window. Then proceeded to refer us to a different brand, which does not have such a great reputation. It was a craptastic experience. We left.

Guess what? We installed the Marvin ultimate next gens, with a different company recommended on here, they have been amazing, and nothing has broken. We love love love love them like no other thing we have installed in our h ome.

Btw, When I did my search of the forum here for installers, all of the same ones mentioned here are also mentioned a billion times prior on here. I’m wondering why a forum search is so onerous. I think I’ve personally written about 85 posts just on window brands over the years too. This forum is difficult enough to search, keeping the threads to a minimum keeps it bearable. But searching for window installers is one of the easier ones.

As you can see, I’ve given up on my quest for some sort of order lololol.

We used a company called EZ-Tilt who now go by Historical Windows of New York (212-977-3090). You can probably find less expensive installers but perhaps not better ones. I am, admittedly, ridiculously fussy about details and finishes. These guys exceeded my expectations. I gulped at the price back then (10 years ago) but the energy efficiency over time has made the investment worthwhile.

I got mine from Brooklyn Window and Door but I’d recommend shopping around. Not going to say they are my most recommended option. I was in a rush and there are more options now.

We replaced our windows over time so have a mix. The Andersen are just fine; the Pellas are complete rubbish (warped and drafty); the Marvins were very expensive but perform incredibly well (totally — and I mean TOTALLY — airtight) as well as beautiful to look at. The Marvins were also installed brick mold to brick mold which means completely new framing. I’m convinced that is critical part of why they look so good and perform so well.

I’d recommend doing a search of the forum, as n-p stated, this has been discussed a lot. Like a lot a lot. We searched when we did our windows and found tons of recs.

Find a dealer who has a variety of brands. And has either an in house architect, or one that they work closely with.

there are ways that some people have had new casements and sashes inserted in the old. not something i am familiar with myself but i know two customers who had it done and i think they were pleased.
