Landmark approval required?
We are considering a few changes to our brownstone and would like to understand the landmark requirements and process:
– Paint the front doors: It’s the original mahogany stained doors but quite worn. We want to get them refurbished but are considering paint instead of stain as finish. What colors get approved? What permit type is needed?
– Take down window guards: We have non-original window guards on the parlor floor windows (probably installed in the 20-30 years ago). Do we need approval to take them down? What permit type is needed?
What are the permit costs?
Thanks for your help!

If you do not change the color from the original colors listed in the document then you do not need approval http://www1.nyc.gov/assets/lpc/downloads/pdf/pubs/App_Guide_Restoring_Arch_Features.pdf

You need a landmarks permit or approval for EVERYTHING you change on the outside of a house within a NYC Landmark district that can be seen from any street. Including removing things like window bars that the commission would never have approved to be installed in the first place and yes even what color you can paint your front door.
It will be “staff level” approvals, and you can do it yourself. Go on their website, download the forms, submit with exact color swatches including brands of paint etc…

If you look at the City pictures of old brownstones, most of the doors were painted, not left w/ original wood so I doubt you need Landmark approval. You might get the archive picture of your building that shows both doors painted & windows w/o guards so you can fight any later hassles w/ Landmarks – which I doubt you’ll get.
