I requested a meter lock so I don’t get gas bills while our 2nd floor apt sits empty. Made an appointment for yesterday and they never showed up. Today over the phone they tell me of no record of appointment and that the account switched the account to my husband as the “landlord”. Now he needs to call and see how to get the meter locked. Both gas meters have been under my name, even when rented for the last 10+ years. I would like to lock the 2nd floor so I don’t get billed and later when the apartment is rented the tenants pays for their gas usage. Key span also labels the account address as 1st floor and our own 1st floor bill as HH. Anyone know what HH means? Anyone have had issues with keyspan and getting meters locked to stop bills?

HH for heat and hot water sounds right. However, in this case I’m 100 percent sure that HH labeled meter is for my apartment (owner)1st floor hot water heater, furnace, stove. The other is only for tenants stove and hot water. Maybe the prior ownews rerouted the gas. We had tenants for over 13 years since we purchased and we paid for both meters. Once they moved, I set their hot water heater to vacation. The gas meter has barely moved, we have just been paying the minimum service charge, a dollar here and there for probably the non in use but still on water heater. Ours remains about the same, if not higher now. So I want to ask the next tenants to pay for that meter service once we get new tenants. How can we transfer the accounts, I’m not sure if national grid will be receptive to that when the time comes.

Maybe Steve, but at least BUG gave back to Brooklyn, via their Cinderella demonstration projects, the annual Brownstone Fair at their Montague Street HQ, their Brownstone Information Center, on Flatbush Avenue, Etc. Sure they were protecting their business, but it was enlightened self interest at its best. Contrast that with National Grid intentionality inflicting pain on their customers in an attempt to force them to lobby state government to increase their profits.

@boo, never mind but thank you for spurring my curiosity. i googled it and saw that our illustrious mayor issued a statement saying that he would move to end natural gas and heating oil in homes in favor of electric by 2040. this leaves a lot of questions but it seems everything this mayor says leaves a lot of questions.

i thought natural gas is the way to go. i mean electric?

thanks you all. yes it’s national grid, I have key span imprinted in my brain. I found out we filled a form to switch to landlord, so instead of me, who was listed on the bill it will go to my husband. We sent a form to remove switch to landlord, after this we can request a lock. However, point taken about the risk of not being able to unlock, so I’m going to wait on that. Thanks for the replies.

It’s happening elsewhere Steve, so I’m assuming a gas appliance/household use ban will happen here too.

We were considering going induction for our stove but probably will not now because we assume a gas ban is inevitable. We’ll stick with gas bc people love gas cooktops despite the advantages of induction and one day a gas stove may be sought after in resale lol

What John Hancock said. If you lock your meter you run the risk of never being able to turn it on again. Gas service is becoming more and more difficult to install these days, and the city may be moving to phase it out altogether soon in favor of electric.

I did this a few years back. If you don’t get it back in use at some point they take out the meter and you gave to get a pressure test again if you want to get a new meter they said. Just something to consider…

Keyspan was replaced by National Grid years ago, so perhaps you’re calling the wrong company. If you’ve actually been in touch with National Grid and they’re unresponsive I’d suggest calling the Public Service Commission.
