It's a cold 48°f outside this morning. How's your heat working?

I’ve already got two emails this morning (it’s 5:30 am) from families saying their banging pipes woke them up last night and wanting to know if there’s anything that can be done to quiet them down. Just know, there’s always a fix. The pitch of pipes and radiators, pressure settings, venting, clogged return lines, piping configuration, are all a factor. re our boiler — First time in our 11 autumns in the house that it didn’t fire when we put the heat on. I posted recently looking for a chimney sweep. Soot in the boiler had messed up the switch inside the boiler, so it would not fire. We got a chimney sweep, but the flue was actually quite clean and no blockage (it is a relatively new metal flue). Turns out we had a lot of soot built up in the boiler, in all sorts of nooks and crannies, so we had the boiler cleaned out, a new switch put in, and now it is running fine. Unfortunately, the boiler cleanout also meant I had cats tracking soot around the house for a day.

PS Every election season reminds me of our discussion at the October 2008 brownstoner gathering about how “Joe the Plumber” was not a licensed plumber. Would that we were only dealing with half-truths of that scale and importance this year.

I just did the basic annual maintenance on my furnace and turned it on for the first time this season. I always hold my breath until the burner lights and the fan starts, but it’s fine. For all a forced hot air furnace’s disadvantages maintenance is SO simple. Just oil the bearings, make sure the grease cups are filled, check the belt for cracks, and clean, or replace, the filter. For the last 10 years or so I’ve been using a washable filter, so I just take it out and hose it down. I’m still on the same can of oil , pound of grease, and fan belt that I bought >40 years ago.
