ISO: Recommendations (or general advice) for Mini Splits/Heat Pump Installation

We are looking to install minisplits throughout our building. We’ve been getting quotes that are $30k apart. Looking to buy smart. If you can recommend anyone or have any advice at all to share, please do. Thank you!

We had to take our boiler out for a very good incentive program at the time (also a non-gut). But we also wanted it out to get rid of all the pipes and radiators and still want to eventually ditch gas for water and cooking. Hasn’t been an issue for us, but if you have no motivation or desire to ditch the boiler, radiators, etc, yeah leaving it totally makes sense as a backup. But if your home is well-insulated, it’s not essential at all.

We have been doing non-gut renovation upgrade work a ton since we really kicked up our HVAC Division…
Best Plan:
LEAVE YOUR BOILER.
You can use it in the colder months and it is looking like it will be hard to ever get Gas back once you go off it. Plus you can get an efficient system to do both Heating (backup style) and Hot Water.
INSTALL MINI SPLITS WITH HEATING AND COOLING
The price difference is minimal going from Cooling Only to a Hyper Heat System. Get them installed and use them as your main source.

I would love to hear more too about replacing boiler with heat pumps. My boiler is old and I already have heat pumps in most of the house so I am tempted to try it. How does your monthly bill compare to what you paid for gas before? Is it comfortable even in the coldest months?

Alexwithak: how did your electric bill this Winter, using the mini-splits to heat, compare to the costs to run your boiler in prior years? Around how many square feet are you heating? I am considering doing the same thing and don’t want to get killed on both Winter and Summer electric bills.

We had out boiler totally replaced with mini splits and they work great for heating. Our house does have newer windows, attic insulation, and it’s attached on both sides. But we had no issues with heat during the cold snaps this winter. Don’t miss the noisy steam heat at all.

Jeremy …I have serviced Intellihot gas fired 1 million BTU units installed as domestic hot water sources for hotels in Manhattan… I don’t think any of their products are small enough for a humble brownstone

@Randolph ny experience is mini splits are nice primarily for aircon and accessory heating. I’m looking for opportunity to install tankless boilers in our renovations. Randolph, the scenario I hear over and over is people with existing radiator systems working just fine who are doing gut renovations and putting in cooling. They’re pondering whether they should keep the heating as is and add in new HVAC on top (usually mini-splits but sometimes central air or a combination), or whether they should remove the existing heating system and put in only HVAC.

I agree with Chris that it is unregulated. Though I always prefer choosing an HVAC company to do the work. Splits can work if the house is insulated and air sealed. I am partial to radiators.

The reason you have a large discrepancy on pricing though is because it is unregulated. I always give my clients the same advice: compare the scopes of work and the companies separately, then combine the two results. You will usually come to the company that is best for you.

beware of the old school plumbers on here that will tell you that heat pumps will not work well. they are scared of their vanishing business and spread lies and disinformation.
